Craig, cool post of the real Buff clips. With all due respect, that "twinkie" was probably one of the top B-52 pilots at the time, who volunteered to demonstrate the aircraft at or near its limits. Pretty amazing what he was doing given its size and how the bank angle is achieved. That aircraft is not friendly to steep angles of bank because that is controlled by airflow spoilers on top of the wing. Not the most responsive method, but it worked for the Buff. Looks like he got outside the envelope of bank angle and airspeed and could not correct given the altitude - nil. No margin for error there...

The Mitsubishi MU-2 has the same method for controlling bank angle. They also have a reputation for being a dangerous aircraft in certain circumstances. Give me ailerons please.

No question about that, but Col. Holland's skill was exceeded by his ego and it finally bit him in the ass.
He might have been a legend, but I don't think that provides much comfort to the families of Cols. McGeehan, Huston and Wolff (who were in attendence if I recall correctly to observe and celebrate his fini-flight).
