Things to do in the BVI
 

Well over a year of planning and training is finally coming to use. I'll be spending a week in the BVI. To say that I am excited it quite an understatment. We fly out of newark on the 26th and come back to Houston on the 5 of January. Supposed to go to Foxy's for New years. One of Fodder's top ten places to be in the world.

Now here are the questions from the Pelican braintrust. What bars do I need to visit? How much liquor can I bring (L)?

Let's see...BVI...British Virgin Islands...islands of British virgins...things to do...hmmm...something about connecting dots...now what was that...?

Foxy's is cool, and if it takes too long to get a drink, it's a short walk to Corsair's.

Where are you staying? If not on, go see Tortola, my wife and I spent our honeymoon there.

There is a park on the top of one of the hills on Tortola that gives an awesome view of all of the BVI and St. Thomas.

I don't remember the names of the restaurants we ate at, but I'll ask my wife and get back to you.

Bring a suitcase full of cash.

Pay yourself a generous dividend.

Staying on a sailboat for a week. So will be seeing almost all the British Islands. Not allowed to go to the US ones.

Foxy's sounds like a really neat place. Is Corsair's in Great Harbour also?

go one bay over to the soggy dollar bar. I like it much better than foxy's. As far as the BVI goes there is so many things to see and do. The island of Jose Cuervo(yes the tequila), The Baths on virgin gorda, the pirate ship for lunch, wreck of the Rhone for diving..... Plus don't forget to get over to the USVI, St. Johns is worth a visit.

Yeah the soggy dollar bar is a definite. I am spending two days on Jost von dyke and will be renting a Mountain bike for a day to do some exploring. Forget an ATV, just give me a bike and I'll go everywhere. Plus you can't do much damage if you wreck a bike wasted. What pirate ship are you talking bout? The willy T? Definitely on the list.

Don't swim in the bay at dusk, out to a small island like we did. Natives told us (when we got back) that is a shark's favorite feeding time. True or not, I still get nightmares.

yes the willie T. And like the last post points out, watch out for sharks. I have personally seen many out there. One time while snorkling when we were swimming back to the boat a black tip was waiting for us under the boat! Not fun!!

Man I would love to be down there for New years. I have wanted to plan a trip for a while now... for those of you who have gone during normal times (IE not near holidays) what is it like? Lots of tourists? I hate places with lots of tourists. I want to chill and feel native, not feel like it is disneyland.... :-/

+1 For Willie T., and Soggy Dollar. There's kind of a game at Willie T that involves jumping into the water and boobs. You'll see.

If you like pretty beaches, you should go to Sandy Cay, around the NE side of Tortola. And, go to the Baths on Virgin Gorda, since you're down there.

Really, you can't miss.

I've been to Tortola with the bride so I figure that's where he's most likely going as it's a popular place.

It's the best of the BVI and other neighbor islands. It's a nice class act. The sailboat harbor is stunning. I spent hours just checking the boats out.

All that doesn't matter to sharks. Sharks are all over the Caribbean. They are everywhere is all sizes and flavors. The sub 50# are pesky PIA. They come around like a swarm of flies unlike the bigger guys [usually].

If you don't have the head for it don't go in the water or find someone you really trust who knows what he's doing to be with you. It's not good to be around sharks and scared.

If anyone does there's a great snorkel area on one end of the island. It's about 3/4 mile to the left of where that 1960s beached movie set Lincoln Continental is. It's a popular beautiful uncrowded beach. A 20 minute walk to the rock wall where's there no more sand beaches is great freediving with all kinds of fish that are cruising through. It's a steep shelf of rock and you're sometimes floating above the deep blue sea.

"top of the hills" is a must do

Plenty of nice restaurants and easy to drive around finding them. People hanging out all over. Tortola is a great place for couples and pretty good for singles.

I'd rather go to Tortola than do the Aruba scene.
