Best way to hardwire a Valentine One?
 

I want to run a permanent power wire for my V-1 into the 996 and don't want to use the hokey wire-splicer deal that they put in the box. (I don't like hacking into factory wires for any reason). I usually run a wire directly from the positive battery terminal with a fuseable link in it for aftermarket accessories, is this what anyone else has done?

Anyone else install their own permanent wire for a radar detector? TIA. :cool:

I used the switchable hot lead to the radio in my 73E, IIRC. I got one of their "junction boxes" with the phone style connectors, from which I ran one line to the remote display unit and another to the V1 itself.

If your 996 has power to the mirror, for lights, etc...you can tap into that.

I actually bought something for like 10 that tapped in.

I used that hokey spliced in wire thing on my 2004 BMW 4 years ago and not a single problem. Running a wire from the battery on a modern car would have been a bunch of extra work.

switched hot lead from under dash.

Wire runs tucked in next to inside door and window rubber door seal up to passenger sun visor, over to V-1 hanging on visor.

Wire not hidden at lower area from under dash to door rubber and on top from rubber to visor. About 1.5" each.

Denis, check out the tech article on this on p-car.com. It's done on a 993, but I think it might work on a 996 too. It taps into the sunroof switch. Worked like a charm in my 993. On my BMW I ran it into the remote pos. battery terminal under the hood. BMW even has extra holes and grommets under the hood, in the expectation that folks will do stuff like this. Very cool. I just use the powelet on my bike.

Not familiar with the 996, but on most cars there is power to the rearview mirror, or as Rick said the sunroof switch.

I plan to tap into the sunroof, light, garage opener console in my BMW. The console is right next to the rear view mirror and has plenty of terminals/contacts I can connect to.

Thanks, guys. I'm just wondering how I will figure out which wire under the dash is for what, everything is all modular these days. (As opposed to individual wires that you can see where they go). I'll poke around tomorrow and see what it looks like.

I like the idea of the sunroof or something on the overhead console, that would be a short wire with no real routing required.

if you shoot through your windshield top band it's not a bad idea to find out what type so you know what your dealing with. Different tints affect range, etc. to different degrees.

I removed the X band from use. Directions on the V1 site.

Back in the old days (actually I did this in my Jeep 2 years ago) we would just cut the power cord, expose copper on the 2 wires, pull the radio fuse (or any fuse that came on with ignition), wrap copper around each fuse blade and plug the fuse back in.

Always worked like a champ.
