Anyone have a Wii
My wife asked for a Wii for xmas. The last video game I played was pong so basically I know nothing. She wants the fitness system. As much as I hate the mall I am going shopping tomorrow. Any advice positive/negative would be appreciated
Thanks |
Good game for old people like me.
Buy it. I get my ass kicked in Halo |
Wii is definitely the family friendly console.
The standard Sports bundle has plenty of value. I suspect she'll want the Wii Fit so check on that, might save you another trip. |
I've been phoning around and none of the local shops have any till boxing day. Sounds kind of funny as I imagine they are probably already sitting in the back room. Can't see a truck delivering them all xmas day.
I'll keep looking |
Brother-in-law just purchased one a month ago. It really does seem like a game system that even non-gaming adults would like. I've even heard of assisted living type places for elderly using it as an activity, so it's not just for kids. Standard game system ($250 USD) comes with a Wii Sports package, IIRC. Enough to keep you entertained for a bit. I think I've seen the Wii Fit package go for about $90 USD. I have no idea what's in it, but I think there may be some sort of balance board attachment for the controller, in addition to teh game software, itself.

My friend lost 40 pounds doing Wii fit every night for several months. Agree sports pack it comes with is a good value. Lot's of fun and my guess is you and the wife would have fun playing each other in some of the games. My mom beat my dad at bowling and she's still rubbing it in his face. Last year that game made Christmas a blast.

I believe Boxing Day is the 2nd busiest shopping day of the year with the day after Thanksgiving being first(in the US anyway). Not sure about Canada.
I think your right that they are sitting in the back room. They probably have advertisements out for them that day. Good luck on your purchase. |
Wii is fun with a group of friends with bowling, tennis etc. We've had ours for little more than a year now and we've gotten into the Tomb Raider game. Wy wife and I are playing through together. Not much fitness in that game but we're having fun.

I've been in the video games business 15 years now. The distribution model these days is "on demand allocation". Nintendo has been having trouble meeting demand since last year. Everyone in the industry goes through great pain to have product drop at all the diff retailers at the same time. Does not matter if you give them a shelf date, if it's in the warehouse it will be on the shelf as quick as possible. BestBuy knows if they don't sell it to you then GameStop will. Sometimes logistics screws up and one retailer gets it a day before everyone else and the buyers go absolutely bat****. |

Wii Fit is a hit for my wife and daughter - and that's specifically what she asked for. |
If you can get the Wii itself, but not the Wii Fit, go ahead and do so. Get the sports pack for the Wii (I forget what its called exactly), there are enough physical things to do there - tennis, golf, boxing, etc - to be fun until you can get the Wii Fit.
|
I know also for a fact they aren't sitting in the back. We get like 15 a week on Sat night/Sun morn and they are gone by the end of the day. The same thing on the Wii Fit system. People are goin nuts for both of them.

Ended up with one at the shop that had the fittness device. Haven't hooked it up yet but will give it a go after things calm down. Has two steering wheels for Mario Cart also, I forsee some drinking and driving in the future for us.

Its starting to sound like something i will use just as much, even though I never have been a gamer. Found a few on e-bay but still would not have them in time. Might have to get up early and head for the big city. I am kinda looking forward to this now myself. I guess if I asked her for a steering wheel it might give it away!!

+1 for Wii
Good family game; kids love it over here. |
Yup the Wii is a great machine no PS3 or Xbox360 graphics but very nice to play games. Tennis and Mariokart are my favorites.
|
Make sure you buy another controller. It comes with one. We bought one for my son last year. My husband and I soon took over. We are very competitive. The tennis becomes very addictive for that reason. I second the Mariokart comment of being the favorites.
|
im not into the VD games either. i figure we/i spend enough time in front of the TV. but, my wife bought my 13 year old daughter a wii for christmas. she had a blsat at my brothers not long ago playing rock band with her cousins, so i am not sure about the wii vs Xbox. after reading this i think i may stay with the wii.
i was hitting some tennis balls with my daughter over the summer, some other people came out to hit. they said their son wanted to start playing tennis after playing the wii, so maybe the wii can have a positive effect, |
wii is an awesome gaming console that can be enjoyed by everyone.

got a Wii for the family last year at Christmas. Daughter 9 and son 6 love it. My wife asked for and is getting the Wii Fit for Christmas this year. +1 on a good one for novices like us.

My daughter and sil are here for the week. She and my son have been video game fanatics since they were little. She mentioned a month ago she wanted a wii for Christmas. We got her one and hooked it up last night. I'd gotten a ps3 a month ago primarily for the blue ray player and got GT-5 and Call of Duty. I suck at video games. My son got home from school for Christmas break Sunday and was smoking hot on the GT-5 first rattle out of the box. I assumed the wii would be more of the same. So we hooked up up last night and watched our son in law and daughter play the games. Next thing you know she has my wife doing it then I was in on it. Really fun stuff.
My daughter had us make our own character and I just had to call myself the Dude to get into the bowling vibe. And drink some beer too. That has to be part of it. |
We have a Wii and the family really enjoys it. Although I am the last person in the world that you would expect it from I love Rock Band. Ok, just the drums and singing as I actually hate the guitar. It is very very therapeutic and my kids play along with me while the wife sings.
The sports pack is also great, my boys love golf, tennis and bowling. It is a great family system. |
An odd turn of events where a video game and television actually brings families together.
|
I got one and the fit game. Now I have to wait and it is supposed to be for her. Looking forward to a great day.
Thanks |

Wife got me a Wii as a wedding present this year, and Mario Cart + 2 wheels for my birthday. It is a blast. Have not been drinking and driving yet.
|
Drunken Bowling is a great game for a adult get together
|
Today I was walking by the PT section of a medical clinic I visit once every other week. Some guy was using a Wii (baseball, IIRC) for some sort of therapy.
|
I bought my family a Wii this Christmas and gave it to them early. Everyone loves it and plays it a lot. This is our 1st gaming console and my wife loves the Wii Fit, the kids play the bowling game and I got them a few more games for opening tomorrow AM. We hooked ours up to the Internet to get updates, etc... Get the extra memory stick to save games, etc... and get enough game controllers and nunchuks.

The wife and I got a Wii for Christmas last year, got Mario Kart for Christmas this year... in between we picked up Mario Galaxy (great game!) and Dance Dance Revolution (which the wife loves). We've had a lot of fun using the system; it is the first video game system I have used since my first generation Nintendo back around 1988, it is quite different from what most people think of when they envision a video game system. |
