XBox360 RRoD -- How long for Microsoft to repair?

Well, last night (just after reaching 20th level in Fallout 3) my 2.5 y/o 360 RRoD'd me.

I'm not even pissed. Electronics break, and Microsoft extended the warranty to 3 years for this type of failure (3 lights, other than upper right) so they're sending a box and tag for it and will fix it for free.

Question -- For those of you who've gone through this, how long does it take to get your xbox back?

I'll be "falling back" on the PS3 for the interim.... dammit!

Happened to my sons as well. That's the light thing right where it locks up? It was easy, they sent all the packing and shipping stuff, took about 2 weeks I think. Quicker than what they said it could be.

Yeah -- the Red Ring of Death (inspired by the BSOD -- Windows' Blue Screen of Death).

2 weeks is faster than I figured, so if that's what it takes, I'll be happy!

I've had two RRoDs and they've both been repaired in less than a week.

.. or you could try the towel trick. Take the box, turn it on, wrap it in a heavy towel with a certain side down (whatever the bottom of the motherboard side is, down) and leave it on for a while. It overheats the chip and can help to resink the processor into the motherboard where the solder connections are crappy. That is the main cause of the RROD, bad solder connections that fail after time. Overheating the ***** can melt the chip back to the board.

I had the same problem. It took between 2 to 3 weeks. Not bad really. Just call customer service and some guy from half way across the world will talk you through it.

My rings were about 6 months ago, and it took about 3 weeks to return.
