Suby STI question for the PPOT brain trust
 

A quick search on Autotrader shows that there are probably over 35 used STIs for sale within 25 miles of me. Some of them are '08 or '09 "executive demos," which, to me, means a salesman beat the crap out of the car for around 5k miles and then they try to sell it at a slight discount.

Is there anybody with some ownership time with an STI here? Is there a reason for the flood of these cars on the used car market?

Before I spend time going through the NASIOC forum, I figured I'd see if there was anybody here with some thoughts.

I had a STI Limited and went on NASIOC and I wasn't happy. The car was lumpy on accel and wouldn't hold a steady mph and clunked like a 4wd truck engaging wheels and when I was at NASIOC they called me names during technical questions and off topic there was BRUTAL! Not to mention they posted like they were texting. R U getin it? I posted a video of me following around a close friends '04 911 turbo and they were calling me a LOSER and other names because an STI could NEVER hang with a Porsche. It was for entertainment that I thought they would enjoy, NOT, at least over there they 'KNOW' that their STI will never be as good as a Porsche. My ownership with that car was very short and the people and community that came with it was VERY disappointing!

NASIOC attracts a much younger crowd than any Porsche related forum or website.

Similarly, the STi also attracts a younger crowd, which would mean if you are going to purchase a used STi, make sure you get a good pre-purchase inspection done. And stay away from modified ones - those are probably the ones that were beaten on more.

Subaru makes terrific cars - I've had two. Reliable, sure footed, and fun!

Cause they're crap and ugly. Drive one around a track..........understeer...then some more understeer........then back off throttle.

Subaru enthusiasts seem to be a pretty reactionary bunch - each new restyle is decried and pooh pooh'd exteinsively before it is accepted as being not so bad really. The latest restyle, being even more radical than the last, was no exception and the STi is now a hatchback no less. Perhaps they haven't been as popular. Perhaps the WRX TR has attracted some would-be STi owners to a cheaper option. Perhaps the economic downturn has led some who would have stretched to buy an STi to back off and get a WRX instead.

Honestly, I don't know because I've been more interested in Porsches this year but I haven't heard anything majorly bad about them mechanically. The rally driver I pit crew for sometimes has been having a ball in his new STi all year and the only major problem he's had was not being able to get his rally rims to clear the front brake calipers. He's been building and racing Impreza rally cars for years.

Be careful buying used.. some of them get thrashed. And be wary of mods.

Oh yeah and stay out of NASIOC Off Topic.. it is not a place for the innocent to wander into. ;)

If you avoid O.T. and General, you should be able to find some info in the less busy forums. Always search first of course.

Having owned an 04 WRX, the Suby is a good car. Nasioc is a joke, as WCC mentions. Don't even waste your time.

THe 2009 WRX is actually faster than the STI, as the regular WRX got a major hp and torque bump. I am guessing the next generation STI will be even faster than the new WRX, so there will be even more STI's being dumped so the folks that are really into them can get the newest and most powerful.

In my opinion the first generation 04's and 05's are the best looking.

I have an 08 WRX.

I bought it in April 08... and have about 18k on the clock... My feelings about this car are all positive. ...


When I got the car I registered on NASIOC. I lasted about a week there since they thought my 30 years of turbocharger experience was worth ZERO......

I mentioned some of the experiences I have had with 700+ hp air cooled turbo engines.... and had posts edited...

My 08 Subaru WRX is a really good car... I already know what I will replace this car with (daily driver), another Subie

Wow. I didn't realize all there was that much cr@p over at NASIOC. Glad I didn't start in with that place.

I've been thinking about buying a Forester XT for a daily driver. There are six or so near me with about 5k miles for between 19.5k and 24.5k. I get the feeling I could get a good deal on one, since nothing is selling now.

BTW: The current issue of Grassroots Motorsports has a nice write-up on the Subaru WRX/STi. It is a good read.

I liked my '04 WRX while I owned it. It was a great car and you could beat on it all day and it'd keep going. I've heard the new ones have some ECU mapping issues that a lot of the tuners and racers know about.

I'd avoid NASOIC like the plague. I found ClubWRX.net to be a lot better but that was 4 years ago. I ditched my WRX when the insurance rate doubled in a year and half because all the kids were getting it as a first car and going 80 mph into garages and wrecking the cars in all sorts of interesting ways..
