Finally getting promoted to Sergeant!

Woohoo!!! In my particular job, promotions are very slow, so I've been waiting for this for years. January first I pin on SGT. Man, I'm on top of the world right now! :D

Well, this is basically what happened.

Shortly after the break up, she showed up at my apartment with the news that she was pregnant. I had her take one of those pee pregnancy tests with me there so I knew she wasn't lying. Of course she didn't know who the dad was. I said I would finance a prenatal paternity test (if I didn't pay for it, no one would), that way I could learn right away if it was mine or not, and start taking care of it if it was. Before I could set up the paternity test though, I went TDY to Korea for 5 weeks for language training (I'm a Korean linguist). When I came back she disappeared for another week, and wouldn't answer my phone calls, but she was making 70+ phone calls per day, almost all of them 1 minute long. I know this because we shared a cell phone plan, and when I found out she was pregnant, I turned her phone back on basically so I could keep an eye on her, keep in touch, etc. Her grandma told me months ago that when she makes all those 1 minute phone calls, she's out scoring drugs. So I turned her phone off, and that very same day she sends me an email saying how much she loves me, blah blah blah, turn the phone back on so she can talk to me, and actually finished the email with "Your baby needs his daddy!" Yeah. Total user. So I turned her phone back on just long enough to tell her that I would never see her again, under any circumstances. I'm going to call the Health department/Child services/whoever it is I need to call and let them know that she's a pregnant addict, so that when she gives birth to the baby, they can take it from her and let a loving family adopt it. So she is truly 100% out of my life now, and I am so glad that she is. I've never felt better. She's a junkie user with no future, and I'm sorry I ever met her. But hey, I learned a lot from the situation, and I'm a better/stronger person because of it, although to be honest due to that I have some pretty major trust issues.

And thank you everyone for the kind words! Fortunately/unfortunately, I've been lower enlisted for quite some time, so I've gotten to "experience" plenty of good and bad NCOs, so I definitely feel that I know how to be a good leader, and most importantly, one that my subordinates will like, respect, and want to listen to. 'Cause in the end, it's all about taking care of soldiers.

Funny tale on how my buddy made Sgt. He was stationed in Japan, 1960's. Job was to guard war plans, deliver them to a General upon request. One morn he delivered a plan.

General: Why aren't you e-5? You have the time.

Buddy: Sir, the Captain says no promotions to those who don't show up for morning PT.

General: But you're working for me then. I'll speak to the captain.

My buddy was e-5 that afternoon. :D

Jeff Higgins 12-25-2008 01:54 PM

Well done Armon, well done. We are proud to have you among our little Pelican community.

Skytrooper 12-25-2008 03:12 PM

Congratulations Armon !! I am sure you will be a fine NCO. In leadership you reap what you sow. Take care of your troops and they will do the same for you. Occasionally you will find a bad apple (sometimes it is jealousy...thinking that they should have gotten the position), but you must work with them, too. In most cases it will turn out fine and you will develop greater respect for each other. Speaking of respect...it doesn't come with the stripes (contray to popular belief) you must earn it. Remember...your soldiers come first...always. The dividends of this approach will reward you over and over. Good luck with your career !

SFC Matt
