Christmas Kitchen Disaster at the Lane Home...

Okay, seriously, how the heck does something like this happen? And why does it always happen to us???

We are hosting a family breakfast this morning. We got out of bed at 7am to begin cooking because the MIL had arranged everyone to be here at 8:30. Well, turns out she told some people 9am and most of the people 10am...

So we put the hashbrowns into a blue 13x9 cake pan. Now I've used this cake pan for years... Today after being in the oven about 30 minutes - it EXPLODED!!! What a terrible mess to clean up...

What? WHY? This is crazy - how does this stuff happen!??

It's ok, they'll just have a little extra 'crunch."

Did you pull it out of the frig or something and into the oven? That's all I can think of.

Wow.

Pyrex I assume?

The same thing happened to my wife a few years ago when making Jello in a Pyrex bowl.

It's not supposed to happen, but I do believe they do eventually fail after enough heat cycles.

I'm sorry this happened, but it does sound like you fortunately had time to recover.

Shedding tears (of laughter) for you, Angela. This is what they call "Building Christmas memories".

Baked hash browns? My wife's been making them in a skillet (without it exploding) all these years. Post a receipe perhaps?

Why, Paul, do all of my most vivid family memories involve something exploding or catching on fire??? These things to not happen to our children's friends families...

Regarding the hashbrowns and pan. The hashbrowns were skillet cooked. The oven was at 175 degrees. The pan was at room temperature (stored in the cupboard) before we put the hashbrowns in. Just wanted to keep them warm.

We have another one of these pans - identical to this one. It's last use was its LAST USE ever. Saying goodbye to that one two. They say "lightning never strikes twice" but in small print it says "except for at the Lane house..."

Angela,

I'm not really sure of the life cycle of these things, but suspect it is shortened by nicks, etc.
One of my sisters had her Pyrex teapot explode on the stovetop one afternoon. It was full of tea. Spectacular mess.

Ah, Christmas memories.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.
