have had three ipods and if you load the software first they will work for a while, but eventually any crash on your system will make the PC forget how to recognise you iPod.
iTunes finally crashed on my PC a year ago so all i use the USB for is to recharge the battery on the iPod. luckily the memory on the Ipod was full so i have a functioning library that i can listen thru the headphone port. but i have gone back to buying CD's again lately.

if i get another as a gift again down loading the NEW software might wake up they system but i doubt it.

Very weird, both my daughter and myself have had working copies of iTunes working with iPods on our Windows XP PCs for 2 years and 4 years. I've not had any problems at all.

It's a hit or miss on a PC. As I stated a couple of my P4 XP machines don't like iPod/Tunes. No warnings of failure, just complete lockup. I have to force a shutdown of iTunes...XP is not affected. I am running 3 different work laptops (all Core Duo XP) and they all get along fine with iPod/Tunes.

Never a miss if you have a MAC

Been there done that. I consider Mac a miss on several levels but then that's not the topic of this thread ;)
