Spend Us Out of This Recession
So last week, I finally bit the bullet and bought a Samsung A450 32" lcd tv for $580 on Amazon. It was Christmas gift to myself and I just couldn't stand the 20" tube set that was in my bedroom at school any longer.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN32A450-32-Inch-720p-HDTV/dp/B00141AYIC/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_1 Today my friends and I got up before 7am and ventured out to Oak Brook for the annual REI Garage Sale. They usually have ridiculous deals on slightly used or returned apparel and hardware. My friends have each purchased a jacket in the past at 70-80% off of sticker. This year I finally got mine. I found a Marmot Rain jacket for $20 that has no visible damage to it. The original retail is $100. http://marmot.com/spring_2008/mens/outerwear/shells/precip_jacket That brings us to the deal of the day. The had a set of 160cm K2 Apache Raider skis with Marker M2 bindings for sale. They had a a few slight marks on the bottom from being on display. The original price from K2 was about $700 and they were on clearance for $469 at REI. I bought them today for $99.93. This price was stupidly low. The skis are literally brand new off the shelf. I paid more last winter for a 4 year old set of rossignol demo skis. The best part is that I could probably sell my old skis and defray most of my costs, but I will likely just give them to my dad since they should fit him as well. I can't wait to get to Canada on tuesday to give these new skis a proper shakedown. I went to the store telling my self I wouldn't buy anything unless it was insanely good deal. I would say that over 80% off both of the items I purchased would qualify. http://www.rei.com/product/758406

I've actually been doing the same thing given the discounts some places are giving. Not that my little bit will help the economy much, but if a few million people do so, maybe it'll help a touch.

Just over a week ago, I helped spend us out of the recession by taking a two day min-vacation in SoCal. Also, I'm still buying things for around the house, since a lot of things are still on sale. No need to thank me, I'm happy to do my part.

Ouch! Hope you're not paying usurious interest....with a tab like that, you should qualify for a bailout. Just tell them you're "tooooo big to fail" Mine? $400 or so...paid in full, as usual.

My friends and I are going to Blue Mountain in Ontario. I wanted to go back to Colorado this year, but that trip likely would have been over $1k and my friends couldn't swing it. So instead we picked Blue Mountain. 4 nights in a condo and 4 days of lift tickets for $300 a guy and gas is pretty cheap for the 10 hour drive. Plus, the drinking age is 19, which is nice for the 3/4 of us that are still only 20. Its not that much bigger than similar stuff that is probably only 5 or 6 hours away in Wisconsin/Michigan, but leaving the country will add to the experience. Plus that exchange rate is working for us a little bit.

It only helps if the money is spent on US companies, like Apple, on a product designed in California, like the ipod Touch. Otherwise, spending money is just adding to the trade deficit...

Yea the garage sale was just a one day thing. However, starting on the 9th, everything on their website (or in the store) that has a price that ends in .83 will be reduced by 50%. Pretty much everything that currently has a price ending in 83 cents is already discounted substantially, so after the additional 50% markdown, the deals will be phenomenal.

Good for buyers, bad for sellers. And we will see the results in months to come.
We are guilty of over-consumption on a mass scale & to service our vice, retail went ballistic over the last 2 decades. I mean, do we all really need 2 malls, 12 gas stations, 6 Starbucks, & 2300 specialty retailers within 3 miles of our homes? So we have far too much retail that depends upon either large volume or high margin sales to survive. Both have nosedived & the immediate future looks pretty grim for a short turn comeback. Buying on super sale is just cashflow with negative profit for the retailers. Hmm, that won't work for long. Sing along with Bob: Oh, the times they are a-changin' . . . Ian
