i'm hanging it out there with you guys. do you like ballet?
this is the first year in a long time, that i didnt catch the holiday "nutcracker". in college i dated a really cool dancer. she actually dragged me kicking and screaming to one of her shows...it was Swan lake. then i made a friend, a dude that danced for the SF ballet. i ended up dating his sister who was with the oakland ballet company.
long story short, i like the art. my wife likes the stuff too. she feels lucky that i dig it, and am willing to go. not sure if she knows "why" i like it. those two ex's were amazing. anyone else?

Neanderthals, especially the ones whose extreme manliness is covering up latent homosexual inclinations, will criticize the heck out of your confession but.....
Ballet is most certainly a fine art. And for those who can't appreciate art but can appreciate sports.....look at ballet from that perspective. Those guys have vertical leaps that make NBA players jealous. And they bounce around with smiles on their faces as if it's easy and they're not really breathing hard. The rate of physical injuries in ballet is, I believe, WAY in excess of just about any sport including hockey.

Opera and ballet = insomnia cure
I can appreciate their gift of song and dance, but can't grasp it as entertainment. My loss, I'm sure. |

yes, the hot chicks my spandex wearing friend was pulling, made me want to stuff my shorts and flit around with the best of them.
he actually married one of them. his wife is tiny, flexible, and absolutely hot. he is physically tough. one of the best hiker/hunters that i know. he walks mountain ranges like they are nothing.

I like it. My wife's old best friend was an ABT principal for a long time; still lives with Barishnikov had all his kids but never married him. So I kind of got dragged into it but really appreciate the hard work that goes into that art- and the art itself. Beauty and grace personnified.
The dancers make squat- and have to be incredibly dedicated to put up with the pain and the hours. Even though the guys wear tights they have to be very strong and very balanced- it ain't easy. They make gymnasts and a lot of pro footballers look like pussies. Both sexes really have to watch their weight- and inevitably ruin their feet. We used to get good seats and back stage passes all the time but haven't been to one in years. Nutcracker and Swan Lake are the best. Giselle is another one. |

Next year you should try Mark Morris' "The Hard Nut" parody of "The Nutcracker," if they put it on. You'll probably like the change of pace. Lots of other good modern dance that Cal Performances puts on at Zellerbach Hall as well.

I like ballet, and I go to the opera and symphony with regularity. I was introduced to all three by my dad, the West Point/Army Ranger/Airborne Vietnam vet. No reason you can't be a man and like fine art and "culture" stuff as well.

Big on Classical Music. Not an expert by a long shot, but that is some very cool stuff. Since coming back from overseas I have a new appreciation for Opera, just seems to hit a cord with me. Ballet, just a little to heavy, I've not acquired a taste for dance. Good on you though, all of the arts seem to be of an acquired and very personal taste. Go for it.

I really like to watch dance, all types. I've never actually been to a ballet. I suspect I'd like it.
I know it's not the same, but I really liked the movie "White Nights". I don't get hooked on, but I occasionally catch an episode of "so you think you can dance". Opera, ugh!

Vash, you are obviously a man securely and safely tapped into your manliness. Personally, alas, I have yet to learn to fully appreciate such a fine form of art. You would perhaps think its right up the fluffer alley, but I really think its the opposite. Good for you and your wife!

Of course I like Ballet, it is so esoteric and efficacious at causing an efflux of efulgent emotion that is so uplifting of the human spirit.
