The worst word in the English language.

"Can't" there are so many reasons why I hate it, it is intolerable.
I can't do this, I can't do that; etc, etc. I hate hearing people use it, drives me crazy! This word is not permissible in our home, period.

I can't argue with you about that! I can't stand that word and I can't think of a worse one. That's not to say that there can't be one of course. But I can't imagine there is.

tiwebber 01-01-2009 10:16 AM

I get your point about "cant". Early on I was told that nothing is impossible - a viewpoint I like so "cant" doesn't have a large role in my life. Worse than "cant" is "should" in my opinion.

You should do this. You should have done that.

My dads favorite was, "the impossible just takes a little longer".

VroomGrrl 01-01-2009 10:28 AM

I don't have as big a problem with "can't" as I do "try." Some things, I cannot do because they violate my principles for one reason or another, or because the tools to do a certain thing are not immediately available, etc. So "can't" is not verboten for me. I can live with a leeetle bit of "can't."

But "try"? Oooooh I really go nuts inside when I'm working with somebody on something, or talking with somebody about doing something, and they say, "I'll try..."

That's like saying to me, "Yeah, whatever. I'll maybe make a half-assed attempt do it and say I 'tried' and I'm done. Hey, I TRIED."

Screw "TRY".

DO IT or DON'T DO IT, but don't tell me you're going to "try"!

Now that I'm all worked up about this, I'm going to go TRY to have a great New Year's Day. Heeeee!

DARISC 01-01-2009 10:48 AM

You ought not use should. And you should not use ought. But I can't seem to quit using both of them. It's very trying.

RWebb 01-01-2009 11:21 AM

I can't understand your position on the use of this word.

Maybe it is just cant.

rouxroux 01-01-2009 11:51 AM

Can't is just the new PC way of saying "I won't".

Jim Richards 01-01-2009 11:52 AM

Emmitt Smith would say it's "debacled."

Dantilla 01-01-2009 11:56 AM

I can't stand this thread. I'll try to get over it.

cashflyer 01-01-2009 12:06 PM

So, don't try to win your race. Either win it, or don't.
And if you don't, just remind yourself that you didn't even try.

There is no such thing as can't, only I don't want to.

stomachmonkey 01-01-2009 12:55 PM

So you are saying you can't say that in your house?

As in "I don't want to grow wings and fly" ?

Tyson Schmidt 01-01-2009 01:09 PM

I bet the original poster is a real joy to live with.

Have you thought about counseling? You know, before the word banning leads to book burning. :p

Sonic dB 01-01-2009 01:10 PM

before i opened this thread...the word that came to my mind when i read the title:

Can't

Fishman7 01-01-2009 01:14 PM

Can't we all just get along?
What did I just say!

It's not that I don't want to, but I can't touch my right elbow with my right hand...

Nathans_Dad 01-01-2009 01:20 PM

I disagree. The worst word in the English language is:

Buttdarts

Eric Coffey 01-01-2009 01:21 PM

This whole thread reminds me of those cheesy motivational posters. :D

Not to rant, but I can't cant, so I can't decant. I should try harder, but I get cantankerous and end up skewing up. But I don't give a spit, speaking of which, one should try to avoid skewed skewers.

My Jewish neighbor (he's more than just Jewish - he's an actual Jew) is a cantor but can't cant or decant either. He's an Irish Jew and has one gehenem of a time getting his Morgan David out of the bottle.

felch.

911Rob 01-01-2009 02:29 PM

We have a rule in our house too. The word is "Can" and "Do".

As for the motivational stuff...... be a fruit inspector!
Someone who does something right must have the fruit on their tree.
Good fruit, Good Tree.

2009 is gonna be a great year!
Health. Family. Wealth. Success.

azasadny 01-02-2009 03:15 AM

I hate the word "actually". Just listen to any conversation between teens and count how many times that overused word is used, it actually makes me, like, sick!

exc911ence 01-02-2009 06:24 AM

I hate "work"... ;)

jcommin 01-02-2009 06:25 AM

My least favorite "Don't Worry" I hear this and I run for cover.

scottmandue 01-02-2009 07:12 AM

Love is just a four letter word.

But I'm not bitter

I concur.

It's a disease.

NICKG 01-02-2009 08:01 AM

are we ameriCAN'Ts or ameriCANS? that is the real question...i love people who always look for a reason to fail...rather than seek a solution to succed

sammyg2 01-02-2009 09:31 AM

I was gonna say it is the "L" word but that's for the other forum ;)

targa911S 01-02-2009 01:02 PM

I'm thinking of another "C" word, that i could NEVER type here. Ugly word, ugly word.

Obsessive compulsiveness at it's finest.
