Gas Log Recommendation

I am planning on buying a gas log for my fireplace. It has the gas feed, so installation should be easy.

Anyone have recommendations?

Thanks, David

two types,an open and a closed system. Or vented and nonvented. The vented needs the flue open the non vented does not. The non vented puts more heat in the room the vented puts heat up the chimney. the non vented is more heat efficient, but the logs have an aroma to them. The non vented also have a oxygen sensor on them so you do not suffocate from oxygen depletion. I have a nonvented system in my kitchen/family room and it does heat the room nicely. The room measures about 20x20. I have 14 ft ceilings in that area so I have to put the fan on reverse to circulate the heat off the ceiling. If you have a mantle, you must use a shield so it will not catch fire with the non vented. That all being said, I got mine at home depot. Always have a carbon monoxide sensor in the same room.

"Always have a carbon monoxide sensor in the same room. "

they develop a new base memory if placed in same room.

they can be flushed out by putting the sensor outside or in a clean room for 24 hours. Check with mfg.

also CO becomes combustible at raised %

I was gonna do a gas log then I decided to do something a bit more cool and artsy.

Cost me about 1/2 the cost of a good log set and is said to put out 5-6x more heat than a log set.

Just a thought.

Measure correctly. If firebox is narrower at the back then the front use the back measurement.

Get a double burner.

I noticed that log sets are hard to compare.

You'll find the same set with different names at different retailers.

Go see one in action if you can.

Bring the wife. I would have just picked up one at HD or Lowes but wifey did not like theirs. Got mine from an Outdoor/Patio/Fireplace outlet. Does not look much different to me and price was comparable but wife is happy so all good.

We just bought 2 inserts made by Lopi. If I'm not mistaken, Lopi, Fireplacextrodinair, and Avalon are all made by the same company (Travis Industries).

We bought front covers that were on the expensive side, and we ended up paying $6000 for them.

The non vented makes about twice as much noise at the vented.

Brad; I was also considering the fireglass but the log set came with the pit. I now like the logs because they are very dense ceramic that once they get heated up can radiate some heat.

Thanks for the recommendations. The AQMD is offering a $125 incentive program to do the conversion.

The glass is very interesting. I am going to check if it is part of the program.
