Vacation time, ideas for someplace warm?
My wife and I are planning on going on vacation the middle of March. No big plans, just someplace warm. Anyone have pro's and cons to the following places.
Virgin Islands Cancun Key West Other? No boats.

I have been wanting to go here for some time. Might be too remote, but it sure would be relaxing.

Virign Islands-The good: Carribean beauty, Not quite the USA, nice beaches. The bas: High cost to get and stay there. Cancun-The Good: Nice beaches, lower cost. The Bad: Mexican vendor hassles. If you have the bucks and the time, French Polynesia is the place to go.

Green Turtle Cay. www.greenturtleclub.com
Peaceful...... NO night life, no casinos, no crowds! Beautiful beaches, great fishing and diving, wonderful people. I used to run the resort. May move back down there soon. Ben

I lived in the Keys from 1990 to 2003 the best thing about it was the view in my rear view mirror as I left there, have not been back and dont want to.
You will be sorely disappointed with Key West. Have been to both the other spots you mentioned, ok to vacation but would not want to live there. As to money Cancun will be the cheaper of the two esp if you get a rental and get away from the city some. Todd |

I've heard that Key West can be fun during "fantasy festival"...NOT family oriented, tho...

If you go to the Virgin Islands (still part of the USA), I'd recommend St. John over St. Thomas. Even just passing through St. Thomas on the way to St. John (via ferry), I thought St. Thomas seemed a lot more commercial.
Another option I'd look into, were my wife and I to take a Caribbean getaway vacation would be the Turks and Caicos. A friend's family runs a place called the Turks and Caicos Club, and she's always trying to get us down there. Looks fantastic.

For short holidays, I'd recommend staying close to your time zone.
Wife and I take a couple short blasts to Vegas straight South of us; makes it a hole lot easier to travel in your own time zone imo. |

Been to Cancun and VI. Both nice. I agree w/HarryD on cons, but all else being equal, I'd take VI (extreme generalization, I know).
SoCal in March? I don't think so. No mention of Hawaii here? Maybe further for you, but certainly meets your reqs. Personally, I'll never tire of Hawaii. Have fun!

Would pick anywhere in the US VI over Cancun. Cancun is a drunken free-for-all of people that seem to lose all self control over the words "all inclusive." St. Croix is nice as a get away, it's quiet. St. John is nice, but if you're a diver, Croix is better.

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is quite nice. I took my family there a couple years ago.

I found the Cayman Islands quite stuffy for my taste.
Maui is pretty commercial, but we stayed in Wailea 2 years ago, and loved it. Definitely quieter that the main commercial strip. Stayed at the Grand Wailea. Nice, but someone told me it has went down hill since.
