How about a "Build a Hot Rod" thread?

There's more here.

I've had that front suspension idea in my head for several years. Now I'm starting to see some fruition. But, an open car, even more minimalist, would be my pursuit.

Whatchagot to offer?

I'd like to build a kit-car.:D

Seriously though, there's a lot of people that have done creative Lotus Seven replicas. There's a pretty solid aftermarket for them as well.

I've always wanted to build a Model-T hot-rod for the track. (Think part Track-T, part T-bucket). Light weight, a V8, and a lot of fab work...

A cross between this and the Volvo would be about what I'm thinking.

Is the '33 a steel kit?

When I win the lottery (hahaha) I'm going to build my own car from scratch. It'll have a nice high revving straight 6, possibly turbocharged, 6 speed manual, mid engined, rear wheel drive, 2 seats, nicely trimmed but minimal interior, etc. Target HP: 400, target weight: 2400. Sounds like fun to me.

I love seeing homebuilt cars, but hate seeing all the design errors in them. Even that Volvo Roadster has a pretty big one- If you look at the photo of the ohlins dampers, they are held in single shear with the rocker- that's a no-no.

And in the first car in Milt's post- the front dampers go into the middle of the lower control arms. I understand the simplicity of directly actuated dampers, and the resulting motion ratio that is necessitated, but that placement of the lower damper mount on the control arm puts a huge bending moment on it. Either it should be able to terminate into the lower outboard control arm node, or be a pushrod actuated damper. Not terminate in the middle and gusseted like hell. It may last forever (due to the huge gussets and overly heavy mounts) but it's still not proper.

Sorry, I design race cars for a living.

Why do they call it a 33 when it looks like a 34?

legion 01-08-2009 05:05 AM

This is the only kind of Hot Rod we see around here:
