My wife is angelic in hundreds of ways, so I overlook her few minor flaws. :)
Like Speeder mentioned, I think it's the era we grew up in and we formed our early phone habits. If the phone rang, it was not only polite to answer immediately, it was the only option, because we didn't have answering machines or voice mail.
Some of my childhood friends had party lines where one ring meant them and two rings meant someone else. That must of been fun to live with!
