Woah! I had a spring break in my Audi!
In all my years of working on cars, I have never seen this happen. While driving away from the house, I heard a pop followed by a rattle over every bump. At first it sounded like the passenger door was not closed. Pretty soon after, I knew it was something in the suspension. When I got home, I pulled the wheel off and saw a broken spring! Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? The car only has 70k miles on it. I've heard of torsion bars breaking on 20+ year old 911s, but not on a relatively new car. It's under warranty, so I'm not worried about the expense, but I'm still scratching my head wondering how this could have happened. Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

You know a lot of people are gonna be disappointed this isn't about you and four bikini-clad college babes partying in your car, right?
|
Have you owned it since it was new? I wonder if it's possible that spring didn't get the full heat/cold tempering treatment at the point of manufacture... I can't think of any other reason it would snap like that.
Find out if there was a recall notice on it. You could work this to your advantage. Just cut the one on the other side at the same point and you'd have the nose of the car a bit lower. :D |

Is that one of those adjustable ride height cars?
And yes, I was disappointed. :D |
i've seen an 2 complete, entire strut/springs pop through the hood on a car that took a pothole at speed, arguably the car in question was old and poorly maintained,
and it was getting abused by us on the country roads , but it sure as hell isn't something you would expect to see as the passenger |
Notify a D.O.T. official...prompt a recall.

All I could do in a short amount of time. Fighting hard to lower Cesiro's blood pressure before he gets to the post section of the page. :D:p |
Sorry guys, I guess I should have titled the thread better!
I haven't owned the car since new, but it has been very well maintained. I looks bran new inside and out, and the maintenance records from previous owner support that. Here's a picture for good measure. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1231692607.jpg |
audis are known for busting springs. A friend of mine just went through 2 on his 93 urs4
|
Some 3 series BMW's are know for breaking springs too. It's usually on the small end so it's not much of a safety issue, but it does suck.
|
Yeah, I see this all of time, Only on a couple of audis, but I also have been seeing it more frequently on e36 bmw ,and have seen a few rear on e39's, then there are the american cars.....
|
I've owned Audis for years and used to defend them, no more
VAG makes JUNK VAG makes cars that are extremely prone to malfunction and to make matters worse their corporate ethic refuses to stand behind their junk to rectify issues. |
Changing a front spring or strut on a BMW?...... Childsplay
Changing a front spring or strut on a Quattro?...... @#$%^#$@#$%#@$#@#$@#%^$#!!!! Of course while you are in there, may as well change all the control arms as many of the non-replaceable ball joint type ends on them will take a shiit eventually also. Same goes for the CV boots as the whole effing suspension has to be pulled away to get at those also. BTDT on all of the above. |
Bonus points for the spring and the Black Audi Wagon.

Just had a front strut out of my Audi 80 yesterday--they have the strangest
top bearing/mount design I have ever seen. Nothing to keep it in place except gravity! Actually the bearing had dislodged itself from the rubber and jacking the car caused the strut to fall out until the top washer stopped it. No noises from the suspension, car drove nice--and you have to separate the brake line to get the strut out. Car goes nice for $500 though. |
Did you happen to see any "R Gruppe" cars in the vicinity at the time?
|
I once had to get help filling the radiator on my Grand National. It might have been spring break or summer vacation. What's the boiling point on used beer?
