Wife's iPod failed
 

Yep, I know its probably been discussed on here before, but who cares... I'm upset, damn thing wasn't cheap, and now I guess the battery doesn't work and won't charge.

Meanwhile, the cheap little Sansa mp3 player I use, has been through the wash and still works like a champ.

Damn you Apple...

You can replace the battery, it's a piece of cake. Don't replace it or send it to apple...Google ipod battery kit and buy a replacement with a couple simple tools to open the case. Seriously.

that happened to my ipod as well, I called there 1-800 number and They were very disrespectful and refused to honor there warranty.
-1 on apple.

I bought it from Costco in December '07. Costco only does 90 days return on iPods. I may try the battery replacement kit. If I go that route, I'll document the battery replacement and post on here.

I have had my kids lock up before and it would not take a charge, go online and search the reboot procedure, there is a sequence of buttons you have to push and hold to reset everything.

What model IPOD is it? If it is a video ipod the battery replacement is fairly easy (plug and play), if it is a first generation nano ipod the battery replacement requires soldering, not impossible but a lot harder, but if it is a second or third generation nano, you are better off sending it in to someone who can replace it without messing up the circuit board.

Hold the center and the menu button for about 10-15 seconds and you should see an apple logo.

I tried that and the reset sequence, and its still dead... I think the battery is toast.

Those Li-ion batteries are good for about 500 cycles, but they will last less if they are maintained fully charged all the time, because it is in the charged state that the electrolyte is most reactive towards the electrodes.

Battery replacement is simple. I just replaced the battery on my daughter's 4th Gen /Photo last week. 4 years old, wouldn't reset. Got a higher capacity battery as well.

Most vendors supply kits with a plasic tool for opening the case, and a small torx screwdriver for the single screw to R&R.

Works perfectly now.

Did you try it with it hooked up to the charger, don't know if that would make any difference but it should run off the charger.

Hook it up to your computer it should charge and synch. If it doesn't it could be something else.

Had mine for 5 years now and the battery still lasts over 6 hours.

Its the battery. I've replaced mine twice (its a 5 years old "click") and my daughters mini once. Basically pry it apart (some sellers on ebay will include the tools), plug in the new battery, and then snap it back together. Might take all of 5 minutes. The ipod creates the illusion that it is permanently sealed, which it isn't. I think I got the battery shipped for less then $10.

Since he brought the IPOD in2007 from Costco, I kinda doubt if he has a mini or click, I could be wrong. The nano, any generations requires desoldering to remove the battery and soldering to install a new battery. Unless you have some experience working with minature circuit boards, most people who attempts to replace the battery end up ruining the circuit board and thus the Ipod is trash. I have brought my share of Ipod nanos that people brought a battery for and tried to replace only to end up selling to me for practically nothing on eBay. That is how I am able to have a music library of over 18,000 songs.

Its the iPod classic, its the larger one that plays video. I tried all kinds of ways to power the thing back up by plugging it in the holder, pressing buttons etc.. no luck. I'm pretty good with my hands and could probably solder a new battery in place. I may ground my hand like the guy in the video does in his demonstration (I imagine that's what the strap thing is on his wrist?)

Ipod classic is like the Ipod 5g video, no soldering required just plug, charge and play. Look at the 5g video from a previous post.

If it won't powerup with a charger it could be something else that is wrong with the ipod.

So if I'm understanding this right, your getting all the songs from these and adding these to your library? What are the chances random ipods are going to have songs on them that you like? I find music such a personal preference. My daughter has hundreds of songs on her playlist. I might like 10 or less.:(
