-9 today, schools are closed...
 

My wife (school teacher) and kids are all home today as the schools are closed due to the -9 degree temps. I believe 377 schools in several counties are all closed (public and private) due to the extreme (for MI) cold. I sure wish I didn't have to go in to work today, but I'm lucky to still have a job!

Rediculous, dont the schools have heat? I dropped my son off at school on Wednesday and my car was showing -28c which is -18f. Yesterday it was a few degrees colder. Right now, 8am, its -9f, I might wear shorts.

-38 C in parts of northern Sweden yesterday. Schools open.

We have hurricane days here.

Art, I'm a little north of you but in the same boat. Wife is a math aide and son is a student at the same school. Our temp is -10F with -25F wind chill. Looks like I have to find an excuse to go out for a bit today (no way I'm getting anything done here today with those guys around...).

A side note; I can't believe how well some animals handle the cold. I went to check on my chickens this morning at 6:30am and they were perfectly fine! Sometimes I wish I had feathers...

It's -17F and the schools are all open. What a bunch of whuss closing schools just because it a little cold.

-21 deg F out in the wide open rural area that I live this morning, -14 deg F 40 miles north where I work in Toledo, Ohio.

I don't understand schools closing for -9.

I lived in Northern Japan on a US military base when I was a teen, and have walked to school and delivered newspapers on foot in weather that was -9 (not including the wind chill).

What an inconvenient truth..........:D

It another sign of the wussification of America. Schools are no different than the rest of our society in that they are worried about lawsuits.... what if a kid gets frostbite walking to school because his parents did not dress him properly for the cold? In todays society it is always someone elses fault when bad things/accidents happen. After all, the school knew it was cold... it is their fault not the parent's fault nowadays. :rolleyes:

Tried starting my BMUU but the battery was dead after about two cranks. Have the charger on the battery and will try again this afternoon or when the temperature go back to 0.

Wait just notice that today photo is taken with the car moving.

If it was Hell in a Handbasket wouldn't it be a lot hotter? I was always lead to believe that you will burn in Hell. It's not freezing, but frigid here right now.

Schools are closed in MN as well. I saw -33 in the car on the way in to work. It was -28 when I started it, after sitting outside all night. -33 as we started to enter the 'downtown' area. Must have been the windchill... ;)

0 in Pennsylvania, kids got 2hour delays. They don't want them standing in the wind with a chill of -12 waiting for the bus. 2 hours later, the chill is only -2, so that's okay.

We are at -29 at 8:49 am, that is not including wind chill, in Winona, Minnesota.

Art, I stayed home today. No way I wanted to take my 19 year old rust bucket with a elec short, out in this cold and drive 100 miles round trip today.

The car is cranky and makes enough weird noises as it is.;)

When I was in Calgary one winter as a kid, it was -30C and everything, everyone was function like if its normal. You guys are real tough cookies.

For a hundred years, they simply called these 'Alberta Clippers'. Now, thanks to the media, it's either a sign of Global Warming, Climate Change, The New Ice Age or The Apocalypse itself ..... :rolleyes:

At least it was a valid reason to close schools. Last Friday, Hawaii State Government closed all of the public schools except for those on the big island of Hawaii. Furthermore, they closed all state and Honolulu city offices. Why? There was a predicted storm that was to hit on Friday with high winds and lots of rain. Neither happened.
