Planning Summer in Yorkshire. Need tips

Hi Pelicans,

I am planning a month in Yorkshire England for my family (Leeds to be exact) to spend time with my wife's relatives. Love this part of the UK (Haworth, York, etc; maybe more than London)

I am looking to:
1. Rent a home or flat that sleeps 8-10 <-Hardest thing to figure out well.

2. Renting a car from Manchester Airport (where I will fly into)

3. Fly from LAX or Vegas to Manchester (i hear that there is a cheap flight from LV). Layover in Vegas would at least let me hit the slots...;-)

Any tips? Good links? Personal experience with this area ?

Went hiking in the Yorkshire Dales when I was home last summer. Beautiful scenery, lots of quaint little villages, castles and ruins.

Also went to the Royal Armouries in Leeds. Very cool if you're at all interested in arms and armour through the ages. If you prefer more modern arms, there's always the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley

York is great of course - my favourite city, I always visit there when I'm home. If you're willing to venture South a ways, Lincoln has some of the same feel, with the Cathedral and the aptly named Steep Hill.

Have you been to the seaside? Scarborough is always good, Whidbey or Robin Hoods Bay if you want something smaller.

Hope to find a monthly rental near Pudsey, about half way between Leeds and Bradford.

More than a tourist visit, it will be a family gathering visit so hanging out with family will be 90%.
-- Going to the pub
-- Breakfast together
-- Going to the track (cousin is a booky)
-- Marks & Spencer (if it still exist)
-- Visiting a few tourist destination
-- tea, tea, tea, biscuits, sandwiches, etc..
-- another visit to the local pub
-- another visit to the local pub
-- another visit to the local pub

A whole month of that is going to drive you bonkers, mate!

If you fancy sneaking off for some motorsports action, Croft racing circuit isn't too far away.

;)

I know. One month is going to drive me nuts. I spend the last family gathering at their home in Switzerland for a month, and wanted to kill them all.
I will try to limit it to 21 days. Not the greatest time to spend this kind of dosh..

I grew up over there, and lived in Yorkshire for a number of years. Don't forget to have some real fish & chips. And be bloody careful crossing the road- they come at you from the wrong direction! I thoroughly recommend a trip to the English Lake District, just NW of where you'll be. Lots of great scenery, pubs and hiking.

Be sure to post pics of your trip!

Cheers,

Paul.

Do fly Yorkshire Airlines when you are there.

HAHAHAHA, vintage Hale & Pace! :D

Wickd, daft question but have you tried Googling "Leeds tourist information"? It comes back with a bunch of links. Should be some property rental information in there somewhere..

I suggest having someone over there set that up. Any outfit either 1) over here or 2) over there that knows you're American, will jack the prices way up. You might also want to look here; http://leeds.craigslist.co.uk/

Good luck!

Paul.

Good Tip!!SmileWavy
