PPOT Brain trust: Looking for vacation info for Montana

All,

The wife and I would like to go to Montana for our next vacation, which would be in late May or early June.

We would be looking for hiking, white-water rafting, scenic drives (a ghost town or maybe some four-wheelin'), and good food.

Oh, and we are not campers.

Any information would be helpful, since the state is so darn big that I'm having trouble narrowing it down to one particular region.

Glacier National Park and the Big Sky area seem to be obvious choices.

Thanks in advance.

PV

To visit Montana without tossing a fly line in the Blackfoot, the Bitteroot or Clark's Fork would be a crime.

Food? The huckleberry pancakes at the Buffalo diner in Whitefish are truly memorable.

In Missoula, the blackened prime rib sandwiches at the Depot are great. So is the eye candy!

Yes these are good places to start.

I would not be to worried about the bears. You need to be aware,
like you are in the big city. Not a big concern unless you are way back in.

I can give you some ideas around Big Sky. Off the beaten path stuff, top draft picks for the Bozeman / Big Sky area would be.

Whitewater raft the Gallatin river June Best
Take a guided fly fishing trip on the Madison and or Yellowstone river
Soak in Chico hot springs / hang out in the bar for entertainment
Hike to the top of Lone Peak in Big Sky
Horse back ride at Jakes Horses in Big Sky
Spend two days in Yellowstone park
Drive the Beartooth hwy in a Porsche or nice rental
See Livingston & Bozeman
Mountain Bike Big Sky

Whole lot to do, I would Get a DeLorme Map of the state

We go up to Glacier every couple years about 5 Hours from Bozeman
It's unbelievable as-well.

Some big distances so plan accordingly.

PM Me if you want more specifics

Have Fun

These are great, guys. I'm getting excited about the trip.

I'm going to assume there are beautiful places in the eastern region of the state, but the Rockies are a must-see.

MT930, thanks for the offer. That's very kind. I will take you up on it before we make reservations.

For those of you that have been there, do you recommend renting a house (from VRBO, for example) or staying at a hotel or resort of some kind?

This is very possible
also possible for the Beartooth hwy also could be a big snow year.

Big Sky has some very good deals on week packages in the summer. Big Sky is not really busy in the summer, they are still trying to develop summer trade. Yellowstone is only 45 Min away. If you are going to fish come after the 4th of July.
Spring runoff lasted until July 6 this last year. The only place you would likely see crowds would be in Yellowstone that time of the year. Most of our friends from the east come during July. Al tho we have had people stay with us from mid May to October & Ski season Jan1 to April 1.

Shop around for lodging the economy here is tough right now.

The wife and I took a road trip last September, we spent 2 days in Red Lodge Mt. Stayed at the Rock Creek Resort on the south end of town, BEAUTIFUL.
Make sure you take the Bear Tooth Highway, it is between Red Lodge and Cook City Mt. we spent the whole day on this trip, great views, hiking and points of interest. Here is a shot from the top of the mountain
Here is a photo from Galliton (sp) the original park entrance.

Agree with the above but go to "Guys Lolo Creek Steakhouse" just a few miles South of Missoula. VERY GOOD!

Helena is a nice area to visit, good fishing and nice scenery.

I love the P-car content!

Thanks for all the information. I'm going to send this thread to my better half.

I wonder if I can edit out the part about the bears...
