I haven't had a library card since '96.

I guess as a student my ID acted as one. That takes us up to 2000.

varmint 01-21-2009 01:37 PM

the libraries out here are homeless shelters.

KaptKaos 01-21-2009 02:12 PM

Yep. I go weekly with the kids.

126coupe 01-21-2009 02:20 PM

Yup

jyl 01-21-2009 02:22 PM

Yes, one of the local libraries is pretty good and we go w/ the kids. The other one is a little, smelly.

mudman 01-21-2009 02:23 PM

I go several times per week. So does my wife and kid. We all have our own cards.

My library is great at helping me find obscure titles and getting them to me asap. Pretty much anything that has been printed in numbers I can get, sometimes it takes awhile depending on where it is coming from.

The reference desk girl is hot, too.

bivenator 01-21-2009 02:30 PM

yes, and enjoy it with my kid often.

Dave L 01-21-2009 02:47 PM

My wife takes the kids every few weeks. I would imagine that libraries are going to become popular as people try to reduce expenses. I used to get audio books from the library but it seems that most of the CDs were "polished" with sand and gravel by previous people.

Hetmann 01-21-2009 02:57 PM

Yes I do. Our local library is great. CDs and DVDs can be a little beat up, but you can order anything online and have it waiting for you at your local branch.

onlycafe 01-21-2009 03:00 PM

yes, and i am also the vice president of our library board.

scottmandue 01-21-2009 03:10 PM

Yes, but it has been a while since I visited only because I have books piled up at home that I own and haven't read.

Seems like every book I read leads me to two or three more.

gtc 01-21-2009 03:10 PM

Lol, your library cards expire? WHY????

Here in the Seattle area we have separate City (Seattle only) and County libraries. Talk about the worst idea ever.

I still go to the library for hard to find or really expensive books. Fancy cookbooks for example. Most everything else I'll just buy used in hardback.

Bill Douglas 01-21-2009 03:11 PM

Yes, I go to Borders, pick up a book or magazine and read it in the cafe :)

My GF joined a book club and started reading LOTS of books so instead of being left out I started going to the library and are really enjoying reading.

Embraer 01-21-2009 03:44 PM

just got a new library card. guys were talking about the costs of entertainment in another thread. in addition to lots of books to read, our libraries have new release DVD's (regular movies, not just documentaries) and it doesn't cost anything to rent them for 3 days...

TerryH 01-21-2009 04:39 PM

The cards expire? ..... diggin deep into the remote areas of my wallet.

My card has a upc code, but no expiration date is visible, but it's old. Probably circa 1985. Wonder if it's still good.

Stanley 01-21-2009 04:58 PM

I use it for the free dvd rentals. they have a surprisingly good selection - lots of R rated movies too- I rented "The Departed" last week.

kycarguy 935 01-21-2009 05:37 PM

I just got a new one. My old one expired because of not using it.

vash 01-21-2009 06:10 PM

yea, last time i saw my card...i was 13. i assumed it expired.

mossguy 01-21-2009 06:24 PM

Yes, definitely! My wife and I are avid readers and our local Lakewood/Pierce County Library is great. We have run out of room for books of our own, so we have become more choosy about what we buy, usually reference type books and those that we expect to read or use more than once. For best sellers, NY Times book list, and that sort of thing, we can research them on the library website, order those that we would like to read, and are called when they come in. The Library is 2 miles away.

Best,
Tom

mattdavis11 01-21-2009 06:55 PM

Yep. Saves me money on some texts need for classes. I bought one book last term. Thanks for the reminder to check on books for this term.

Porsche-O-Phile 01-21-2009 06:58 PM

Yep one for here, one for City of Ontario (I used to have to be out that way on business semi-regularly and it gave me somewhere to go at lunch when I used to have to go to the building dep't). I know I still have one for City of Chicago (they were surprisingly snooty about giving me one, actually - from back in my grad school days), Boston Public Library, and a few others. Dunno if any of them are still valid, but they're all decent libraries.

kconway 01-21-2009 07:20 PM

Nope, I have two. One for LA County and another for Orange County CA.

I used to be a librarian and don't think I ever seen that card. LOL

ramonesfreak 01-22-2009 06:13 AM

always keep my library card i have probably ripped* 3,000 CDs from the various libraries in NY state over the past 8 years for free...so, thats about $40,000 in free music.

*as in uploaded, burned, copied. not stolen

Jeff964 01-22-2009 06:16 AM

Yes, HK public library card member since 1998. Just checked out Ted Turner's autobio "Call Me Ted" this morning.

LeeH 01-22-2009 08:14 AM

At the rate my wife and daughter read, we'd be broke without the library. That said, we still spend a couple of thousand a year on books.

I'm a fan of the paperback swap club (see my signature). Basically you list your books and other people list theirs. When someone claims one of your books you put it in the mail (at your expense) which give you a credit in your account. Using that credit, you can claim books that others have posted.
