IE Tech Question: Region Coding
An increasing trend on websites & YouTube is region coding which blocks content from one market into another.
For example: some Sony music video content is only available in the US. Since I reside in Canada, I get a message telling me that the content is blocked in my region. Obviously Sony Canada slams the door on US commercials that are attached to the video. Anybody know how to reset the region coding? Or how to circumvent it? I found one script via Google but it doesn't appear to do anything. Thanks Ian btw: Don't tell me to use another browser. I am not going to & I am sure that they all have or soon will have the feature . . .

Look for public proxy servers in the region you are trying to access. Be careful! Lots of potential problems when you do that though.

Depends on what they are using for region detection.
Primary place you see it is disc based media, DVD's mostly. It's done to reduce grrey market penetration. Your CD/DVD drive control panel/utility will have a place to change region encoding BUT BIG WARNING HERE. Region encoding can only be changed 5 (IIRC) times. Try it again and the device becomes permanently disabled. If you do this set to region 0. Unlocked. If it's utube and online stuff I'm going to assume they might be blocking you based on your IP addresses geography. In that case you simply spoof your IP address. Use an anonymizer or Public DNS service. There is a site in the US that I frequent. It's use is blocked from US geography so I switch to a German proxy and they think i'm coming from europe and the content is all available. EDIT: Probably based on IP address, Canada and US are the same region, region 1.

Well, yeah, use another browser.
That said, I don't think there is any place to set regions in IE - you can set languages and character encoding, but nothing that says "I'm in Canada". Might be possible they are doing geolocation on your IP address, in which case using a proxy would work. Got some sample links to content, etc. that is doing this ?

Here's an example:
Random Video Thread Page 88 Post 1746 Here is what I see: ![]() This is not a life or death problem but it is annoying & since revenue is involved, I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg. Ian
