Question for network gurus

I may spend the day trying to figure this out, so I thought I might as well ask the pros...

I have connected a wireless router (Linksys WRT54GC) to my office LAN network in order to access the network from my wireless computer.

In order to acces internet, I have given the router my desktop PC IP adresses on the LAN side, and I have cloned the MAC adress of my desktop PC. I have given another IP to the desktop PC. It works fine to access internet from the laptop, but I can`t see the other PCs on the LAN.

Now, I would like the laptop to see all the LAN computers behind the wireless router. How do I do that?

Confused at what you did.

Was/is your network controlled by your desktop? Meaning WAN comes into it?

Typical setup would be your WAN goes into the Linksys which can be left as the default DHCP server.

You can also leave the Desktop, laptop and other computers as dynamic clients on the LAN side and everything will be visable.

No, my desktop is a client on a wired LAN.

I did not put the linksys on the WAN side (too far from my office) , I just want to use it for wireless access to the LAN in my office. I could connect the laptop directly to the wall and see all computers, but I want to do it wireless...

Agree if the wireless router was connected to the WAN, but it is not.

You've confused the heck out of me too with your "hacking" :). Duplicated IP (of your desktop on the Linksys), and a cloned MAC address (on which device)...WTF and why? In a nutshell, the Linksys should be your DHCP server (for the laptop), and will also be the gateway router into both your "private" network and the Internet in a "typical" network routing configuration. Have you consulted your network guys/gals?

OK, if the Linksys won't be your router and you just want the wireless function of it, you need to NOT use the WAN port on it. Go from your existing switch/hub into one of the switch ports (LAN side) on the Linksys. Then it will just act as another switch on your wired network and as an AP for your wireless. You'll want to disable DHCP, etc. on the Linksys.

Yes, that is it. I am going to try that. Thanks!

CSMA/CA no likey cloned MAC addresses.....if I understand correctly.....

Right, you shouldn't need (actually should avoid) cloning a MAC.

As stated, you should just be able to use the switch ports to connect to the network without doing anything else fancy. Connected this way, all of the PCs wired or wireless should be on the same network. Then as long as the PCs have networking setup correctly, they should be able to see each other and get to the internet.

I assume you have another router acting as the internet gateway or are you sharing a connection from the wired PC?

If you worked for me, the security guards would already be in your office watching you pack your personal items into an empty box. But, we have a policy about rogue access points and have the technology to detect and disable them.

That is why I work in a University. I like freedom of experimentation.
And our network is already hacked by the russians anyways ;).
