Private health insurance recommendations
Title pretty much says it all. I'm single, 48, in good health, and will need to select an insurance provider pretty soon. I'm assuming it probably varies greatly by state, so any experiences in NC would be especially beneficial. Thanks in advance!

Doesn't Billy Mays have a commercial for this? I think it's called Ican.

Do they have HMO's like Kaiser in NC? A PPO like Blue Cross will be expensive (relatively speaking) if an individual policy. I know I'd look into all those race shops in Charlotte and see who they have.

Well, I do belong to a HUGE group, the PSUP. I doubt we can get a group rate though
. My previous company had switched to BCBS a few years ago, but I recently found out that they dropped BCBS and switched over to Aetna (for the last part of my severence period). Sorry Rick, I can't buy anything Billy Mays is selling just out of general principle (kidding, I will check them out). I've seen Humana One ads recently on TV (targeting folks like myself)...any experiences? BTW, I'm not necessarily looking for something "dirt cheap", just good basic coverage for "big ticket" expenses (referencing Dueller's other thread) and the like. Keep the suggestions coming...what do some of you other PSUPs do for coverage?

I just signed up for health insurance with Blue Cross in Texas. $213/mth for me and my wife. It offers discounts on doctors visits and prescription drugs.
But, it only covers 80%, after $5000 deductible. Lifetime max is $5 Million. It's like car insurance. You only use it if you need it.

Thanks red-beard for the specifics...that seems reasonable. I can handle a few hundred per month, and could absorb a deductible if necessary for the unexpected that might occur.

Run the rate quote calculator for individuals - this one is for NC

Oh, and I'm thinking of keeping this, even if I get a new position with Health Insurance. I want to keep this coverage continuous and $213 isn't too much to spend.

AETNA costs me $389.00 a month for great coverage, modest deductibles, and I'm old and smoke. Bought it on line too. Don't let your old lapse, it's easier to get it when you got it.
