I'm actually shipping my LandCruiser today to my brother in Idaho. I went to a website where you put in the info and you get quotes from up to 10 companies. Burbank, Ca. to Boise, Idaho bids ranged from $525 to $925.
I went middle of the road with a company AAALL States Auto Transport. They are out of Iowa and are great to deal with, good communication. It was $625.00, $100 on pickup and the balance on delivery. I dealt with a guy Stan (866)985-3952.

Depending on the vehicle a broker site can be a good deal.
Normal everyday car fine. For the valuable stuff I use Horseless Carriage. Pricey but worth the piece of mind. Enclosed will be more than open. Real true door to door is not the same as "come pick it up at the closest off ramp or shopping mall parking lot" door to door which is again cheaper. Most important thing, IMHO, does the car go on and stay on till destination or is it one of those "FedEx" type of deliveries. They pick up cars in the same general area but bound for anywhere, drive to the middle of the country, unload the cars and pick up waiting vehicles going to the same destination. It's not uncommon for a car to sit at a central depot for weeks on end if it's destination is not a popular (economical) one. Also the more times it comes on and off the higher the risk of damage. You want to be on top, if not the car needs to be covered (no tarps allowed on exposed carriers). Not uncommon for the vehicle on top to leak something, gas, oil etc... on the cars underneath. Again, it's all about the car. Oh yeah, you want the drivers cell number.
