This mix is pretty good and no brains necessary. Spicy and regular, sometimes will mix a pack of each. Make it about 8 hours before I need it so it blends well and chills in the fridge. I like ice cold dips and salsa.

Made a pile of carnitas taquitos a while ago and wife took photo. I can eat about 20 of these things with a six-pack of cold Bud. Now I'm hungry!

Wife suggested we do to Denny's for the free breakfast this morning... nah.

Sammy,

There used to be a mini-chain of restaurants there in Tustin/Orange, CA, called El Taco (Not "Del Taco). They used to make THE BEST taquitos and guacamole. Do you know if they're still around.

I used to hit up the one on Tustin Ave, right by the 22 Freeway. The picture posted by TerryH brings back such vivid memories, I'm drooling all over my desk!!!

El Taco was the first of the genre. Then came Taco Bell and Del Taco. Yes, El Taco had some good food. I'd say they had a lot to do with introducing Mexican food to the mainstream.

AFA avocados go, I like to mush them up on some good bread over some mayo and dust up with salt and fresh ground pepper. A good cheese is optional.

When I lived for a short time in the semi rural South (AL to be exact), people didn't know what an avocado was. That was one reason to leave amongst many.

I've got a big tree in my backyard. Mine are smooth skin "Fuerte", a bit nuttier than Haas and I get about 200 a year, except when we get a cold snap. Kills all the fruit on the tree. You can speed up the ripening by putting a bananna in the bag with the avacados. Also leaving the pit in the bowl of guac keeps it from turning brown.

Never heard that, good to know. A little lemon juice does a good job, too.

Cut one in half and fill the seed cavity with lump fish caviar (cheap) and squeeze on lime juice Wonderful !!

14 trees on the property allows us to eat them almost year round. Just picked three dozen last friday.
Fuertes are my favorite but Haas are more durable. This year we were able to produce 14oz Fuertes. You haven't eaten a great avocado until you pick it yourself.
Green butter on sour dough toast. What could be better?

Wow, lot of avocado fans here.

You guys who eat avocados frequently - say, one a day or more - do you notice any health benefits or detriments? E.g. lowered cholesterol, or expanded waistline?

I found these links

El Taco #52. I've gourged myself there too many times. A long time ago they used to have specials on Tuesday IIRC, the tacos were cheap!
We'd all get together and order 40 at a time. Don't know if I ever tried the guacamole there.
Haven't been there in a long time, I need to check it out again.

Tobra 02-03-2009 09:12 PM

I need to plant one of those avocado trees, but it might not like the cool Norcal winters too much, maybe in a container, or a little greenhouse...

tabs 02-04-2009 12:18 AM

AHHH Tobra you do know that to produce fruit the tree needs to be grafted.

Schumi 02-04-2009 02:09 AM

Never had an avocado in my entire life.

I don't believe I'm missing it.
