No 370 Z for me

Looked at one yesterday...I do fit. I'm sure that the handling and power are everything Car & Driver says. I wasn't fond of the aesthetics, but figured I could live with them.

Ahhh, but this morn, I read what Cindy had emailed a friend...she's right:

"He felt good enough yesterday to drive to Albany and check out a new Nissan 370Z. All I could think of was it wasn't nearly as nice as what we had. Oh well, if he wants it and it makes him happy I'm all for it."

Gotta get it in my head that I'm done being a car guy. If I'm to drive something ugly, it might as well be cheap ugly, right?

(edit) I mean, nobody cares what you drive to the pool hall.

Is she going to be driving it or are you?

If you spend the rest of your life comparing everything to what you had, maybe you shouldn't have sold it.

I think you need a 993 Twin turbo, thats what I think.

pwd72s, those things look like they could be kinda hard to get into... you know, that low roofline? Did you have to contort to get in, but fit okay after you got in?

I am constantly amazed at the ergonomics of what it takes to get in some cars.

Even cars that you'd think should be easy to get in without hitting your head or having to contort your head and neck.

For example, this Lincoln Town Car:

I rode in one back in October with friends to a blues festival. Front passenger seat. See how the top of that door scoops over into the roof a bit?

The engineers just did that to fool ya... the padded interior juts way down. I'm only 6 feet... but I had to jam my chin into my chest or try to lay my head 45 degrees sideways to get in.

I never imagined that could be necessary in a bigazz car like a Lincoln.

I saw a car carrier filled with 370s. They're more gorgeous in person than while power-sliding during the AFC playoffs.

The 370z is all wrong for you Paul, and you know exactly why. That car is powerful, nimble, has terrific brakes, good seats, etc., everything your intellectual side says that you need. In fact, I would love to have one - great car! But the 370z is lacking the one thing that your heart misses the most of that lovely 72 S.

The 370z has no soul. For all the competance it displays, all the raw numbers it generates, all the oohs and ahhs - it does not have the raw essence of a real sports car - the "soul" that is standard equipment on a vintage 911.

For you Paul (and quite a few of the others here), a car without a soul, even a really extraordinary car, is nothing more than a highly competant appliance.

Heel n' Toe nailed it...not only the aesthetics of the car, which is only a matter of opinion, but I had some pretty serious ergometric doubts as well.
Undoubtedly many of them a result of me being 6' 3".

The vision out the mirror was horrible...like trying to see everything through a tiny slit. No over the shoulder vision as well. Side mirrors okay, but they don't cover everything.

headrests not adjustable, and they forced me into a "head down" posture.

Vision out the front was horrible as well...in order to see a traffic light change, I would have to move my head forward and down, a lot. Roofline forbids merely glancing up.

Miss the 911, I do...miss a few of the people connected with these early 911's?
NOT AT ALL! No more "gruppes" for me. It only takes one arrogant egomaniac to spoil things for all.

Miss the hassles of driving to Portland & back to get serious work done on the car? First a two car convoy up, then a drive back in one car. Then another drive up, then another 2 car convoy back? 90-100 miles each trip? NOT missed AT ALL...Portland traffic is a Kamikaze zoo these days.

So, back to square 1...maybe the next month's car mags will contain a car worth checking out.

Yeah, I was disappointed. This was the first one to get me to even look at a car for months.

If you buy that Lincoln Clown Car, I'll visit and take pics for all the Pelicano's to see...

Not long ago, the Honda dealership here had a used one on the lot...$6,000. Hmmm, there you go...the camping vehicle you were looking for! Just give it a lift kit and make it a 4X4...

I agree...but figured I wouldn't be looking at those when I was driving. The aesthetics thing...but the more I looked at the car, the more I realized it was designed to appeal to high school kids.

Huh? I think it's designed more for people who remember the original 240-Z.

I think PW should get a 240-Z.

I think the 240-Z was on one or the other Classic Car Magazine lists of 5 cars an enthusiast should own.

Not necessarily in this order:

1) Mini Cooper S
2) Porsche 911
3) Datsun 240-Z
4) Ferrari Dino
5) Unimog (for when the Viagra stops kicking in)

You know Paul, I always figured you would wind up with a ROW SC, preferrably a post 80 model. Not too dear, and all 911 at the core.

Just a fun car.

Nah...an early 90's C4 with a slight lift, 4 light hood mounted lpod, tall skinny all terrain tires, and mud flaps ala Rothman's rally car.

Seriously. I can see this done tatstefully. It'd be a hit at the range. At half the price of a 370Z.
