do you sprinkle salt on your watermelon?
my parent's very old stock broker did it years ago. man, i was probably 4 or 5 years old, but i still remembered. i just re-visited the concept, but i seriously kicked it up a few notches. i broke out a box of large grained french sea salt. WOW! the mild salty flavor, and the added crunchy texture. i was amazed.
watermelons..probably the best argument for the dog days of summer. (and bikinis)

i think that's a southern thing. the salt is supposed to bring out the sweetness of the fruit.
i also heard from a mississippi gal that watermelons are poisonous if eaten before the fourth of july. i have tried balsamic vinegar and fresh ground black pepper on strawberries. sounds really strange but it was actually pretty good as far as contrasts go. I grew up salting watermelon. Haven't done it long time. Thought maybe it was a Minnesota thing. Taste good either way, but no salt would be the healthier choice.

hey, maybe it is a southern thing. salt enhances flavor. that is why you put a pinch into sweet things like pie crust.
just a few crumbles of salt adds something. i wont do it to a great watermelon. just what i need is more sodium.

watermelon, cantalope, apples, oranges, raw potato, etc... salt on everything! salt and pepper on most everything else. sometimes salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper just to spice it up a bit

I go light with the salt on almost everything except watermelon and grits (along with lots of pepper). I think I just gave away where I'm from

Don't really care for salt on ripe watermelon, but salt on green watermelon is delicious. Had a nieghbor when I was growing up that started picking the watermelon real early in summer. The green ones she ate salted and the ripe ones without salt.

I'll do it sometimes. I like wmelon either way.
Nothing weird about it, there are tons of foods that combine sweet and salt (most candybars are an example), that's a very appealing combo to a lot of people. |
