IMHO one of the best surf movies/documentaries to come out. I was in Aus last March and got a board from Mark Richards. We discussed the film, but fortunately he didn't tell me the storyline. Awesome tale...Those guys all still rip!

Ever seen Step Into Liquid? It didn't have a wide distribution, but it did come here... beautiful film... I was really glad I got to see it big. Got it on DVD later. Will check out BDtD for sure... sounds like a great surfing film. Always wanted to get a copy of Riding Giants... I've never seen it.
________________________________________ Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1468727577/ User Comments In search of the perfect wave, 20 July 2005 Dana Brown, the son of legendary film maker Bruce Brown, continues the family tradition with his own take on the world of people that are totally committed to ride those waves, no matter where. In a way, this is another installment in the way Brown sees the world of the surfers as he takes us all over the world to show us what people will do in order to discover the perfect wave, and ride it. The brilliant cinematography is amazing to watch. Things obviously have improved greatly since Bruce Brown pioneered this genre of documentary. We get glimpses of Oahu, with its rugged coast and giant waves. We are taken to places like Rapa Nui, Ireland, Viet Nam and even Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where we had no idea people will go to their rough lake to surf! Someone made a comment about the title being pretentious, but in reality, the line comes right from one woman that is being interviewed and says she feels like "stepping into liquid" whenever she is surfing. The film is beautiful to watch. It could have used some editing, but in general Dana Brown ought to be congratulated by what he has captured on camera for fans of the sport and just plain folks that will be, no doubt, wowed by what they see on the screen. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0308508/

Saw Step into Liquid at the Angelika Theatre in NYC when it came out. Didnt care for it so much...some nice photography for sure but i thought it was a little soft...or, i dunno, made for family viewing. Maybe im being to harsh on it...I better see it again
Riding Giants, I think, is the BEST surfing film ever made. Well crafted and the story development is well done. The extra feature with Stacy Peralta re: the making-of the film is quite good too. The Mavericks portion is my favorite Some of my other favorites are: SUPER SESSION Starring Bertelman, Rory Russel, Gerry Lopez and more classic rippers. Also epic skateboarding from the seventies, Surfing filmed in Australia, California and Hawaii. Running time: 88 min. "Exceptional surfing orchestrated by virtuoso editing and photography.", SURFER Magazine, 1976 Endless Summer, both I and II Morning of the Earth http://www.morningoftheearth.net/ Surfari (1967) - tough to find...got my bootleg copy of ebay

+1000 on super sessions LB was soooo great aka "rubberman'
His compadre "Buttons" was featured on Dog, the bounty hunter...strung out on meth, what a drag! 5 summer stories is another great flick...Even today, I can't go to a surf flick w/o sneaking in some sort of adult beverage. Old traditions die hard. Our local theatre is just right for surf flicks...on the 101, built in the 20's, exudes cool: http://www.lapalomatheatre.com/

probably not accurate to call it a surf film, but Surfwise was pretty interesting and certainly worth seeing and pondering when in a philosphical mood

AWESOME...Netflix has it streamable...think I'll check it out tonite. Dr. D made some headlines a year or so ago, giving a bunch of surfboards to Palestinians (I think). He was trying to promote harmonious living thru surfing

i like to think of myself as very open to any sort of "alternative" life pursuit, but even i had a difficult time accepting this doctor dude....found myself getting angry by the end of it, which really surprised me because im usually the one that says, screw school go run off to baja in a vw bus...
Another film that is very similar to Surfwise and also streamable on Netflix is called "Following Sean". Has nothing to do with surfing, but you see the similarity if you watch it. Highly recommended

Ya gotta include Big Wednesday on this list!
Bonus question. Who is credited with inventing the tri-fin "thruster"?

Well that was one of the best. A true historical surfing movie presented in HD.

Okay, take a break from thinking about serious surfing films and watch this... it doesn't have music, so cue up something at least 2.5 minutes long that would make a good surf sound track and then click the link... you will thank me...

Very Cool, and a hoot.
Is that Laird Slater ? or Kelly Hamilton maybe ? I don't know how many hours I spent/wasted on those flat days imagining I was small enough to surf those tiny perfect waves.
