with my brother and i, it was a natural progression. firearms -----> hunting.

nobody in our family hunted. where this (hobby) came from, nobody knows. we spent our summer job money on hunting magazines, and that first marlin .22 was put to small game hunting in no time.

Depends what he wants to hunt...if he wants to go to Africa on a Safari..to hunt Elephant well the kid is just outa luck as far as I would be concerned.

He is an animal lover so I don't think he has any interest in hunting. He did request the multicolor deer target last night at the range but I think that's just because it turns different colors depending on where you hit it.

If he wants to hunt I'll hook up with some and take him out (I've never done it). But given his nature I don't think he wants to see an animal dying in front of him. I've seen it before and I don't care for it either.

I think he'd certainly be into blasting clay pigeons though...

I thought that's what zoos are for

If he wanted to hunt something fat ugly and a burden to society he wouldn't have to go any further than Vegas.

I'm an animal lover. Hard to believe, I know, but I'm as big of a softie when it comes to animals as one is ever likely to meet. I've had pets all of my life, treating them like members of the family. I go a long ways out of my way to not disturb or frighten animals in the wild, and have spent countless hours watching and observing scores of different kinds.

But I do hunt. I've killed more animals than most of you will ever see in the wild. I eat them. I know our place in the relationship with them. It actually does sadden me a great deal when I see an animal fall to my gun; I have cried my eyes out kneeling over them, stroking their fur, appologizing... But I get up and do it again. It's hard to explain to anyone who has not done it. Hunting and loving "all creatures great and small" is not as incongruous as it sounds.

i dont cry jeff, but i do give a quiet thanks. i also love animals and the outdoors. i know i am just another one of those animals. i'm one that eats other animals...

I want to hunt.

I have no idea where to start. It seems the laws and regulations in Illinois are so complex, that only someone who knows what they are doing can successfully negotiate all the licenses and fees.

The only shooting that I plan to do at animals is with my DSLR. But, if it came down to it, I'd kill stuff to eat.

they are expanding and destroying endangered plants + messing with the native wildlife

Actually a very good suggestion... and a little easier for SOME people to understand when they see the damage those things can cause to property, crops and the enviroment.... They are like roaches/termites of the woods that actually taste good...

the last animal i killed on purpose was a chipmunk when i was 11 with my wrist-slingshot. it damn near sent me suicidal. i could never end an animals life for any reason, but i get it. i know why people do it. i understand that one can love animals and kill them for sport or food or pleasure. i just cant bring myself to enjoy that process

then again, i was looking at this (in my opinion) disturbing website yesterday that is dedicated to crow hunting. there are photos of hunters with like 300 birds all lined up symetrically from one mornings hunt..... i dont get that. i understand crows can be pesty, but i just dont get that mentality, that complete abandonment of restraint and respect for life

i was an avid fisherman most my life. i cant bring myself to enjoy that sport these days unless i am intending to eat the fish...

Took my son to a hunter safety course when he was 12. He shot his first deer a month later when the season opened. He wanted to do it. His mother was pissed because she got the letter from school saying that children had to be in school and not taken out for whatever reason (treehugger teacher). He hunted with me for the next 4 years till he discovered girls were more fun than being with dad. He also learned to not tell his teacher he was going hunting those 4 years. :)

Teach him right and he will learn to respect wildlife.

I never have hunted and have no desire to start... however I would defend your right to hunt with my life.

ditto X 1000. every big game animal we have shot we always paint lightning bolts with the animals blood on the shooters face(a la johnny depp in "DEAD MAN") its a indian thang that you city slickers wouldnt understand and all of us say a prayer thanking that animal who gave its life so we can eat.

now for all of you who live in cities i know that sounds barbaric, but their hasnt been an animal, i myself
or others with me have shot and killed that we EVER let go to waste with the exception of plain ol PITA VARMINTS!

im sorry but i just have never had to stoop so low to eat rats. at least not yet!

most people have never had to survive in the wild nor have been trained to do so. we have eaten rabbits/squirrals etc. while taking our survival class. and once you do it , its not really a big deal. be it a small animal you eat or a big juan that you eat. either juan is the same as skinning/gutting/sawing bone and packing it out or cooking it on the spot. you will be amazed at how good rabbit or squirrel is with just italian dressing thrown in aluminum foil over the fire. or edible meat placed on stick and held over a fire.

hunting is more FUN than anything i have EVER DONE IN MY LIFE with MY KIDS! they respect wildlife and its environment, they learn firearm safety, they have learned how to fish oceans streams lakes and rivers and how to cook them, they learn how to survive, from sharpening a knife/axe, to building a shelter, to finding clean potable water, reading trail sign, building a fire, animal poop sign, animal tracking, people tracking, and most important.....................HOW NOT TO GET LOST AND DIE!

about the best thing i can leave my kids when i CROAK! RESPONSIBILITY and the ability to survive any weather conditions thrown at them.

i cant think of anything better honestly and once you expose kids to it they are hooked for life.

Ya'll know that I am a gun guy, but until moving here to W. PA, I haven't hunted since I was shot on a public hunting grounds in Ohio as a kid. I have been shooting clays in Florida forever, but this is a community of hunters. Opening day of buck season most businesses are closed. All my wifes brothers who live here hunt. They have continually bugged me to hunt with them, and until one day I declined, saying " I like to shoot clays because all I have to clean when I get home is my gun".

That one day was when I agreed to go "Hoggin'"with Mjs big brother. He is a farmer and was always complaining about how much damage the ground hogs do to his bean crops. I didn't blieve it until I saw it for myself. Holy crap they can eat half an acre in no time! Well now I felt justified in killing the little suckers and it was war! All last summer after supper, he and I would go out in his AWD pick up into the fields. We would park, set up lawn chairs in the truck bed with refreshment and just wait for one to stick it's head up out of a hole. It was like fishing! Two buddies chewing the fat and bonking a few hogs when they appeared. What a blast! My first Hog Gun was a 1903A3 Springfield in 30-06, the one Seahawk owns now, great gun, deadly accurate, but a little overkill for a 20 lb. hog. Hog gun #2 was a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in 25-06 that is also super accurate, but I was worried about the distance it was deadly at with other farms around, I still have it and use it occasionally. Hog gun #3 is a Howa 1500 varmint gun in 22-250 and the first round down the pipe was a kill.........perfect. He and I were talking just this morning about how we can't wait for them to wake up. When Punxatawny Phil was on TV this week my trigger finger got erect! Last summer I killed around 40 of them myself.

Even though they are a nuisance, I still feel a little bad killing them. A life is a life.

It is a very common evolution to go from shooting paper to wanting to hunt. You should support this thought, if it comes up with your kid. Also consider archery as a fun activity. Take him to a trailblazer event some time: http://www.trailblazeradventure.org/

Shooting an animal is part of hunting, but it is not what most hunters enjoy about it. During big game hunting it may be weeks in the field until a single shot is fired.

I am the same way. I like to be successful, but if I am not, no big deal. I call it "armed hiking". It beats regular hiking by far, because you are quiet - no talking - and focused and enjoy nature at a much different level. You see many more animals, hear a lot more noises and you are out there during sunrise and sunset - the most amazing time of the day. You even go out during seasons you would not think about camping otherwise. Snow camping during late season is something I greatly enjoy and would not do without hunting.

I am an animal lover Dogs, Cats, Horses, Rabbits, Frogs. We have them all.

In my opinion caring for animals are a big part of growing up,they are a mandatory for my kids. I have always had them always will.

However there is always room next to the mashed potato's and gravy for some of god's critters.

Try a good elk steak some time. You will have dreams of harvesting one, I am very sure they are for eating. ;)

Some of the best days I ever had with my dad were in the field. He's gone now but I think of deer trips in Michigan all the time.

As a kid, I shot my fair share of birds and squirrels in my parent's woods and I enjoy shooting, but I do not like the taste of deer, so I never became much of a "hunter". I do however shoot plenty of varmints on our property each year (skunks, racoons, possum, woodchucks, rabbits and an occasional stray cat that is screwing with our cats). I grew up in somewhat of a rural farming area as did my wife and we, like most folks around here have no problem using our guns as tools to eradicate varmints/pests.
