Their worst albums (Amnesiac - I don't really count Pablo Honey) are better than the best stuff put out by other "good" bands. Yorke and Co. seem to understand aural rhythm and melody on a subconscious level; they just tap into threads of harmony and dissonance that parallels some of the great Jazz musicians... and, yet, they're rock. Sure, they're a hell of a lot more experimental and electronic than they were in the 1990s, but they still f*ing rock. AND, as an added bonus, they are one of the greatest live bands on the planet.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot = WTF = What the Fu**

OK.

What would you recommend as the best Radiohead album to get for someone who would like to understand what the fuss is all about—but doesn't?

Thank you.

May I ask what the genre-appropriate drug would be for Radiohead?

I'm pretty sure my neighbour will have this "in Rainbows" disc. Let me start by giving that a test-drive.

I'm long on single malt, BC bud and vicodin. Anything else, and I'd appreciate a heads up.

:-) well, sir you have good taste. i would substitute the single malt for a nice pear brandy, but thats just me. regardless, the combination of items you suggest should set the appropriate mood. go heavy on the BC bud ;)

i love amnesiac. love it. i do not like pablo honey. i do not care much for hail to the thief. i love most of the bends. i love ok computer, and kid A

live on jonathan ross show. if you dont like this, you wont like em..its that simple

I still think that their best album is "OK Computer"; it was named Best Album of All-Time by either Q or Spin back around 2000, beating "Dark Side of the Moon," the White Album, etc. I'm not sure it will hold up THAT well to the Beatles 20 years from now, but it definitely must be considered among the top 10 or 20.

In second place, as far as Radiohead goes, I would put "In Rainbows." It really is a phenomenal album.

Preliminary rankings:
OK Computer
In Rainbows
The Bends
Kid A
Hail to the Thief
Amnesiac
Pablo Honey (barely counts as a Radiohead album)

ramonesfreak 02-09-2009 04:47 PM

i dont agree that it beats dark side of the moon. hell no, never ever. nope.
:-)
but i love ok computer. i dont think any band will ever beat the vibe that dark side era pink floyd had... but its close, no doubt. radiohead is certainly the pink floyd of my age group/generation

ramonesfreak 02-09-2009 04:50 PM

i think that one of the problems that "certain" people have with radiohead....is that they are really really hard to sing along with.

like floyd, their lyrics are deep and reflective of the reality of our world and filled with fear and warnings.

unlike floyd, you cant understand a freakin word :-) but i love that about them

Well I sort of liked that. A bit nasally and wingey and monotonous for my money, but I didn't get into the reccies yet—so that may be the issue.

ramonesfreak 02-09-2009 04:55 PM

Dottore, i wonder how you listened...with headphones, or connected to a stereo system with nice speakers or desk top speakers? the fidelity of their recordings, including that live recording, can be pristine and detailed and needs to be listened to the way you might listen to miles davis or dark side of the moon. the engineering of their recordings is as much a part of the music as the playing and singing

anyway, good for you for giving it a shot

I mean I get the innovative point, but does anyone actually enjoy listening to this stuff—without a serious E-buzz I mean?

It's like "interesting" art that is innovative, but you really wouldn't want it hanging on your wall. Whisky Tango Foxtrot.?

I would start with OK Computer.

Your question is like asking someone to explain love, or the Mona Lisa. :)

Best,

BTW, Radiohead is like scotch; you probably didn't like the first sip you took of it, but over time the taste became sublime.

My favorite version of Paranoid Android:

Good point. I listened on my lap top. But I will take this upstairs in a minute and give it a serious spin.

Cheers.

Good for you; most people would have made the pre-determined decision "I don't like it" and moved on. It's nice to see an open mind; I should have expected nothing less from a HST fan.
