another diesel ?- is this a deal?Chevy dually
I have been toying with the idea of getting a cheap dually or 3/4 ton truck to eventually pull a car trailer and possibly a RV in the future. I already have a great daily driver, my SC and a 914 in the works so I'm not looking to spend a ton. I have found local to me a 1997 Chevy dually 2 wheel drive extended cab with 141,000 miles. From the pics I've seen it looks like it's in good shape with no obvious damage, broken glass etc. I've asked for more details before I go look at it but they are asking $3800.00. A few weeks ago they were asking $4500.00 so the economy is taking its toll. So does this sound like a decent buy? Are there any major problem areas on this vintage Chevy diesel? Your feedback is appreciated.

Yes, lots. Do a search on the 6.5 diesel. 97 was a better year. They went with the much larger water pump. Something like 130 gpm instead of 85, if I remember right. The heads are a mess. I have one now that has a blown head gasket, at best. That engine is totally controlled by electronics and the fuel controller sits right on top of the engine, just under the cover if it is still there. If it is, it should be thrown away. Its called a pump mounted driver I think. I put 12,000.00 in my engine with just about every improvement you can think of and it still a dog. If the heads get up about 1200 degrees (egt) for longer than about 2 minutes they are trash. If it has a manual tranny thats good. If its got a auto, then I hope it the L480E and not the l460e. Price isn't bad but the engine is the weakest link. Do your homework. Check out sites like thedieselpage, and gmtrucks.com. Good luck. You would be better off at twice the price or more with a duramax.

That's a good deal, and a decent year, but I wouldn't buy it for towing. It simply dosn't have the guts. You're better off with a 454. Or better yet, buy a Ford with a Powerstroke if you must buy a $4000 diesel.

My last truck was a 6.5. After doing the standard upgrades (PMD, lift pump...) it ran fine. I never had a problem, but it didnt have a ton of power either. If I was to do it again I would seriously consider a 350 instead.

After doing a bunch of online research last night and today it looks like the 6.5 is a dog. I'll pass on this one and keep looking. Thanks guys.
