how does our 911 heater works?
Don't laugh at me for asking this question. I have this car for many years but I never can get the heater to work with fan on.
When I pull on the red levers at the mid console, I do get good amount of heat, and usually that's all I need. Occasionally I want more because it's so cold, I try to turn on the fan (controls are at the front dash, above the shifter), then immediately, no more heat. Another reason to turn on the fan is when my front windshield is foggy, I turn on the fan to blow it up on the windshield to defrost it, then my heater won't release hot air any more. Another occation is when the car is iddling, or driving too slow around town while it's too cold outside (our car need higher RPM for the heater to blow hot air, even the red levers are all the way up), then I want to turn on the fan so it can blow hot air to my hands. Soon the fan is on, the air won't be cold anymore, even at the kick panel vents. Why? Is this the way our car built? |

I did the search before I asked but couldn't find what I was looking for. I was not only looking for how to fix the blowers but rather how to use the heater properly. Anyway, after talking to a friend (on the phone), I know that this is the blowers' function and I think my blowers in the kick panel are gone.

You should have great heat in an '87. You should have the footwell blowers, but it could be that they are broken or siezed. My '88 had fuses inline right at the blowers. I think the '87 should also have the fuses. But before you just replace the fuses, you should see if and how easily you can spin the motors.
My '88 targa's HVAC worked great when the footwell blowers worked. |

It's really important to get those footwell blowers working if you want good air-flow. They make a huge difference.
As far as defogging the inside of the windshield, if you get in the car and crank the heat to full, that will make them worse. When the car is cold and has been sitting, you're better off setting the defogger to full cold, then as you drive the car, over the next mile or so, gradually change the temp of the air to the windshield to hot. That should keep your windshield 100% fog free. Going full heat when the car is cold makes it worse. |
