Is CD going the way of the 8 Track?

I was looking at my latest Crutchfield and I see that there are car stereos now without a CD player. They have USB connections and SD slots. All MP3's and WAV's all the time.

Will the CD as we know it go the way of the 8 track?

Eventually. Why mess with CDs when you can fit 10,000 songs onto a USB memory stick? Or better yet, put them on your iPod so you can listen to the music anywhere. You simply can't beat the convenience of Bluetooth + iPod in your car.

I have replaced the decks in both my cars. In the 944 I have a sony unit with a USB input, for this car I just have a very small USB stick with about 4GB of music on it. If I need I can also plug in my ipod thought he Aux in. In the Saab I have a Pioneer that nicely interfaces with my Ipod and its stored in the glove box. I get very frustrated driving my wifes car, the mazda 3, because I cant plug anything in.

CD's are obviously obsolete. A memory stick is way better. Holds WAY more media, more portable, less likely to be scratched/damaged and doesn't skip over bumps.

...........just the next logical step in data storage /playback technology. (1) Ease of use; (2) storage capacity

My '88 M5 has the original cassette player so I use my Ipod with one of those adapters.
Sounds surprisingly good.

What's the fun in that? I love skips. I also love the jewel cases with the artwork on 'em.

CD's forever. Bah, humbug to iPods... they have no soul and they are from Satan.

I can see it now... you know how we now use the phrase "vintage vinyl?" How do you think it's gonna sound to say "vintage acrylic?"

They can have my CD's when they pry them from my cold, dead hands. :D

Even when CDs were still the norm, I thought they were a pain. Too few songs, and they were more of a pain than cassette tapes. A cassette tape you can grab blindly and don't have to worry about scratching or getting finger prints like a CD. Cassettes are thicker, but otherwise less bulky. CDs data storage is too small. I could see maybe using a compact DVD, but even then, some sort of flash memory is much, much better. When you can fit almost 23 CDs worth of music on a memory card the size of a dime (micro SD card), it just doesn't make sense to use CDs.

I have a Blaupunkt in my car that has no cd, just an SD slot. Why carry around all those cd's when I can load up a single 2GB SD card.

Man, gone are the days of making your favorite 'mix' tape for that long road trip.

Now instead of 10-12 songs you bring 1200...

strupgolf 02-20-2009 12:22 PM

Don't tell me I have to give up my 8-track tapes for some CD thingie. Wait, now its a I-pod thingie. Man oh man, what's a guy to do.

Well I guess we better stop bringing in cool looking (and sounding) CD players. :o

But our sales of a $449 outboard D/A converter that we carry are through the room as people realize that the DACs in iPods & such are . . . mediocre at best. ;)
