How do you Transfer a program to another laptop?

So I have 2 laptops, both with Vista and only one has a Microsoft Office Picture Manager. It's a decent program and works without a lot of extra bullcrap.

How do I transfer, download it to a disc or memory stick and load it on the other machine?

I've already tried looking for it online.....

Does one laptop have Office and the other doesn't? Do you have the disc to install Office? Picture Manager is a minor option in Office. If you don't have any Office install disk, I'm not sure if this will be possible. The problem is that these days most programs put registry entries all over the place and have files in several locations.

Vista has an 'easy transfer' option specifiaclly to move files from one pc to another with a special cable, BUT, not sure if you can move programs.

Outside of the most basic utility you need to run the installer to get a Windows app to work. There are too many registry entries, linked files and the like for even basic software. Short of a backup/restore to a new machine, which usually causes a ton of problems, it's generally not possible.

This is 100% true. You will need an office install cd and then choose "custom" and install picture manager. Or you can download "Gimp" for free and it has the same basic functionality, or more if you want it.

Both have Office, but one has "Pro" and the other is "Home". Pro doesn't have this program.

Vista will transfer data and settings but not programs. Just reinstall the program on the new laptop. There really isn't a good way to "move" programs...

If the software was preinstalled on the laptop when it was purchased new (meaning it is most likely OEM software), then you would be pirating software in the first place. You cannot simply move most software from one machine to another.

Even if you had the original install media (the CD) that contains Office, it would be a violation to install it on another machine if the CD is Marked as: "This software is for distribution with a new PC only." OEM Software is tied to, in all practicality, the case of the computer. That's why that little shiny Microsoft Authenticity Certificate is attached, so that one knows it is OEM and not Retail. That Certificate also gives future owners of that machine the ability to install the original Operating System without having to purchase it. OEM Software is not owned by an individual.

If you do own the full Retail copy of Office Professional, you can purchase replacement media from Microsoft for a small amount.

It's ridiculous all the replies of people not knowing what they are doing, yet trying to steer you the wrong direction. It sounds like most are condoning pirating the software...how sad.

It is possible to do this, piece by piece, and get it up and running on another machine - I remember doing it once with a small app several years ago, but it's such a pain in the ass that it's not worth it.

If you don't have the original install CD, then I'd agree with other suggestions to just find a free, similar program online and use it instead. Start at download.com - there are tons of free, simple yet not limited image editing apps out there.

FWIW, from a legal standpoint, I believe installing software you legally own on 2 of your own machines is perfectly ok (for example, buy one copy of office, install it on your desktop and laptop). Morally, I'd say it's perfectly, 100%, completely acceptable. I've done it several times, and will continue to do so.

Always get your OEM keys out of the OS before you do any work:

http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

save them somewhere, then order the media you need.
