Microchip for pets

Our 6 mo. old Saint Bernard is being spayed next week. We've been asked if we want to micro-chip. We haven't done this with our other dogs in the past. Our dogs are indoors, and not left to roam outside unsupervised, leash walked, etc...

What would cause a vet to 'scan' for a chip, unless someone brought the dog in as found?

Pro's, con's...

Microchips are great if he ever gets out; it will speed his return should that ever happen. I have them in both of my kids.

Who has the ability scan in the event of a 'lost' dog? Animal control, vets only?

Rikao4 02-27-2009 05:24 AM

for San Antonio,
all animal control workers carry a scanner..
no id beep means..you have about 48 hrs before your dog takes ' the walk '
my vet scans EVERY dog...dog's & puppies get stolen..

I always watch mine,never unsupervised..they can't get out.. RIGHT !

it's cheap insurance..
your P may never burn..but if it does..
then is not the time to say
well I was thinking about buying a fire ext.
mine are chiped & tatoo

Very cheap insurance.

In my part of New Jersey animal control, the police and vets and some groomers have scanners. Our vet scans every dog that comes in to ensure it is the rightful owner. Animal control uses it in the event they pick a dog up to contact the owner. the chip in my dog also allows the to retrieve his medical history. As an example I took my dog to get groomed they asked about current rabies shots. they scanned him and retrieved the record.

I had the implant put in after my dog escaped from my truck. I was taking him from my home to our shore home. I stopped at a convenience store to get a snack for the trip. While I was in the store he squeezed out of the sunroof and was apparently running up and down the strip mall looking for me. A mortgage broker let him into his store. I went store to store but the mortgage broker looked closed so I didn't go in. I called the local police and they gave me the address of animal control for the town. As I was driving to animal control animal control showed up at the mortgage broker. Long story short when I got to animal control they said my dog was on his way back so I waited. When they returned my dog the animal control worker that picked him up said four people tried to claim him. He said if the dog wasn't so skid-dish and ran from everyone he may have turned him over to one of them. He advise for $150.00 I could have the chip implanted with all my info and telephone number. I went right to the vet and had it put in.

Just another way for 'big brother' to keep watch over us.

Get the chip. If your dog ever gets lost or stolen, you get a phone call as soon as a vet or animal control gets him. $25 well, well spent.

Its not GPS based, big brother won't be watching if you take your dog with you to the bathhouse. Not that there's anything wrong with that..

Okay - I wasn't sure how proactive vets and animal control were in scanning animals that were picked up or brought in.

Jeff Higgins 02-27-2009 07:28 AM

Yup, they all do it (scan all pets) here. Animal control will do it right when they pick them up, figuring the errant critter must be close to home. You get ol' Fido back right away, along with a ticket for him getting loose. At least you get him back.

I hope you are kidding about the kids.

I tried having microchips for pets... no matter how hard I tried I couldn't teach it to play catch. And having it sit in my lap while watching TV just wasn't the same as a dog or cat.

Oh sure they are very clean... but not very much fun otherwise.

YMMV

I'm thinking he is referring his pets as "kids" as I sometimes do.

Kidding about having them, or kidding about chipping them?

I only wish I could get a Steve Wong chip for them. They might actually clean their rooms, mow the lawn, and stuff like that.

Nahh, they would just do the same faster, and burn more fuel :D

I have them in both our cats, I await the day I can get a GPS tracker on them, I really want to know where they go during the day? The 3.4 Carrera has a custom SW chip btw.

Mine has 3 buttons. The thrid one is an orgasm button. The wife likes to steal the remote, grab the collar and hide in the bathroom.

She's been in there an awfully long time...
