An Egret is eating my Koi!!

About a week ago I noticed two of my Koi ( Moby and Dick) were missing a a third ( Ahab) was badly wounded. I thought it was a raccoon or a skunk but it turns out I caught this guy snooping around the ponds!

I don't want to cover up my ponds because I don't want them to be like a zoo enclosure but this is really pissing me off! I just checked and Farragut is missing! the only one left is John Paul Jones and he is a baby.

We had this problem. Netting was the only thing that solved it. As a consequence, the netting made the pond horrifically ugly. It now looks like some sort of machine gunner's nest with camouflage around it.

I hate that damned pond. PITA.

I have a dog. Shadow is now patrolling the area but he is out front with me a lot of the time. I guess I have to design and build some sort of low powered Close-In Weapon system, like the one I worked on in the Navy.

I've seen a "bike wheel spoke like" arrangement with fishing line do wonders for not letting birds get down... resturants, etc. use them to keep the gulls and whatnot off the porch... have seen a coworkers set up to keep great blue herons out of his koi pond.

Where I live they would probably beg me for the carcass to make Egret head soup or something. I guess I will let him eat the last Koi and just go with goldfish or nothing at all. Yeah he is fat on my Koi!!

Raccoons also like Koi. I don't know if you have any where you are, but we had friends who lived in Hollywood - and nowhere near the hills - whose entire Koi population was decimated by one or two raccoons.

Someone once told me a looped recording of a seagull in distress will scare away almost any bird. But where you find such a recording, and if you can at all stand the repetition is up to you.

I don't know, though. Goldfish might be the ticket. Koi can be really expensive.

Phalanx Close-in weapons System

From Raytheon:
Phalanx Block 1B, the latest upgrade, with its surface mode configuration, augments the proven anti-air warfare capability by adding a forward looking infrared sensor and optimized gun barrels to the Block 1A configuration. It allows Phalanx to be used against littoral warfare threats such as helicopters and koi-eating egret threats. Block 1B also adds new control stations with situational awareness that allows operators to visually track and identify egrets before engagement.

I wrote the training curriculum on the Phalanx 1B! Pretty awesome weapon. I also helped train the army to use their version. Good stuff. I was thinking of using photo sensors instead of RADAR and instead of the MK61A1 cannon I would use a .177 I.D. pipe with a hopper full of BB's and an air compressor, just have to work out the gun drive system. I thought I could use a switch on the back door that would cut it off if the door was open so the dog won't get nailed. Hahahaha!
