The following were all built by the same Polish immigrant - although the neighborhood is know locally as the "Russian Village". All built in the 20's and near a dry wash, this guy, with no education nor architectural experience, built 14 of these from river rock and broken concrete. Many of the tiles came from a local school district whose building fell in an earthquake. This guy's stuff, however, has withstood some pretty big temblors!

On a side note - there are a great many residential, commercial and infrastructure projects around our foothills built of river rock - a resource much more abundant than wood. Locals claim that much of the work was done by Chinese labor when their railroad work in the latter part of the 19th century ran out.

That's near Glendora San Dimes somewhere? where is that Greene and Greene, is that off California Blvd? We study and research like heck and seen a bunch before we started that job without any architects involved.

That last batch is in Claremont, CA.

Here is a house built by the Doheny family in the 20s. It is over 5000sq feet on five lots on the cliffs in Dana Point. The owner is trying to get rid of the house, give it to the city and have them move it or get a permit to demolish it. It is on five lots and they can build and make some money. The second plicture shows the ocean through the window.

Very cool house. The Doheny's were pretty neat people - gave a lot of that oil money away!

Thought I recognized them. I lived on N Mills just north of the train tracks in Claremont faculty housing. Was a broken-down craftsman. After we moved out they finally rehabbed it. We bought a Mediterranean craftsman in Historic Highlands section of Pasadena. The west side house is a 50's modern that was designed by the guy who built it and lived there. Very cool mix of angles and round wood.

I have to say that I don't care for Gheary's house. Feels like he's trying too hard with the design. But everyone has an opinion...

A Stout Scarab. Only about nine made, so lots of luck with finding one.

This looks a lot like the house I was raised in. It's a post adobe. My father designed it and built it himself. The second picture is the Ortega Adobe. My dad borrowed the full-length veranda from the Ortega. It was a beautiful home to live in. The fireplace was made of California lava rock. Every interior wall was 8" thick adobe block. The cedar ceiling had 12" beams. The front doors were rough hewn redwood recovered from bridge footings. They weighed 500 pounds each and required a counterbalance so they would swing easily.
