OK, i want to scream at my parents...
.................but it wouldnt help. FORGET living in las crusas. much too close to my parents.
here is the new drama. awhile back, my sister thought it would be a great idea to get my parents a dog. so she found tztsh tsu. my parents spoiled it rotten. human food, cooked for it, let it run the show. the dog blew up into a jabbathehutt. it is easily the fattest dog i have ever seen in my life. when i pick it up, the fat forms around my hand like a tempurpedic mattress. we begged for them to stop with the treats. the dog is maybe 7, and just got diagnosed with diabetes. my parents need to give it insulin shots! DAILY! they are on a VERY fixed income. they wont tell my brother how much money this is going to cost. i will end up footing bill. i know it. my parents killed the poor thing by interpreting what they thought was love. i am super annoyed right now. ![]() anyone know what kind of cash outlay we are looking at? i should have kidnapped the little fat effer.

OTOH, if the dog is prescribed a regimen of walking 5 miles a day to lose weight and control the diabetes, your parents might also benefit from the exercise? Try and put a positive spin on things.

LOL. Try reading some James Herriot(t) vet stories from the late 80's. There was a rich dowager's spoiled dog named Triki Woo (pekingese so she named it a chinese sounding name). Often uncomfortable because of a condition brought on by excess feeding/weight. Perhaps, this is what is making your parents dog "surly".

Not to be crass, but you could put this dog out of its misery pretty quickly and painlessly.
Find a vet who makes house calls.

why would YOU pay one cent for THEIR dog? i am confused. i wouldn't pay for insulin for my own dogs. the dogs are there for MY benefit, not the other way around.

dont be a deck nynor. i just had a bad day at work, and i dont need your idea of family. how am i enabling my mom by kicking her a razor cellphone, and picking up the bill?
however misguided her idea of raising a dog is, me sending my mom fun money is not enabling. it is just what chinese culture is. we have been doing it for thousands of years. this thread was just me venting. preach somewhere else

yep, i'm a dick (er... deck?). you vent in a public forum and people comment. in fact, what i said was much less inflammatory than many of the above comments (read: shot to the head, etc.). i must have hit a nerve.
have fun paying for vet bills.

I have a relative who does the same thing - killing their beloved dogs with "kindness."
It's sad, but that's what many older people do. Stuffing the poor dog with so much fat, sugar and calories that it just can't handle. Unfortunately, the way it kills the dog is pitiful. Never a quick death, but one that involves excessive weight, hair and teeth falling out, diabetes, slow agonizing organ failure, etc. Oh yeah, and then combined with ridiculously extensive medical treatments to try to combat the self-inflicted wounds. Sad - but other than them not having any dog at all (not a bad option, IMO), there's nothing you can do about it. A lot of older people have food issues, esp. those who have lived through circumstances where food was at a shortage. It's a behavior that simply can't be changed. Hopefully your parents dog has a relatively quick death. I think that's the best you can hope for. |

Who cares about the dog.
You are so lucky to have two living parents. The body produces a certain amount of insulin, and this doesn't increase with body weight. So if you get the dogs weight back to normal, his insulin amounts should be correct. |

Its a dog for crist sakes.. If your parents want to kill it or spend food money on shots... then let them..

Totally understand where you're coming from, vash. We had a cat with diabetes. Can't recall exactly how much the insulin cost, but my wife doesn't think it was much more than about $30 per month. Don't know if that was just for the medication, or the needles/syringes as well. You parents' dog might be bigger than our cat, though, which might require more medication. Heck, just ask your parents how much the vet said it would cost. Chinese love talking about stuff like that. FWIW, we've got a partial bottle of insulin still sitting in our fridge. You're welcome to it.

There is an aunt in our family who has completely fecked up three kids in the same manner as your mother has fecked up one dog.
We discussed the issue at some length with various family members and concluded that there was nothing we could do about it. It is what it is. Families feck you up. That said I think you'd be nuts to pay for insulin.

when did it switch over from parents being the smart ones, and them turning into stubborn people? I think about the same time when you and your siblings left home or got out of college and had a real job. I ask the very same question everyday. don't worry you will be just like them sooner then you know. No getting around that. No chance. I fear that I am almost there and I have got another 25 more years to go. |

Sometimes, or certain things, others just will never understand. Never. By you doing that, it puts a smile on their face seeing that little dog. that's worth more then $$. Its all they got. I mean something to take care of, they look forward to that. Grand kids? What if you tell them how much that would cost and maybe they will stop feeding the dog like that. I had a client who would heat the dog's food before giving to them. |

I had a diabetic cat..insulin and syringes were about $50/month. The hypodermics are by far the expensive part.
