Question Any one ever rent a storage POD

I want to put my house up for sale and start showing it but I want to thin things out some first.
So I was thinking about a pod for a few months, or maybe buying a used moving truck and parking it somewhere else?
Pod anyone?

My rents used one while we redid the kitchen. Check Home Depot too, they have a competing service in this area. If the neighbors are ok with it it's not a bad deal.

Just find a place that sells those steel shipping containers. We got a 40' for about 2.5k delivered. Water tight and I'm not to sure it isnt bulletproof.

The PODS work well, they pick it up and store it at their warehouse too.

I highly recommend PODS. We used them to move. Had about 3 weeks between closings. Movers quoted almost $10,000 to pick up, store and deliver. We paid about $2000 for 2 PODS (they were moved from AL to SC) and then paid a local moving company $200 to unload the heavy stuff. The other benefit is you can pack and unpack at your own pace. They charge per month doesn't matter if it is in your driveway or their storage facility.

We have. It's very easy. A big truck drops the pod off where you want - in the driveway or in front of the house - they give you a padlock and key, and even help you load it up - at least the company we dealt with did. Then, when you're finished, they come load it up and that's that. Easy.

I ended up using 1-800-PackRat as they were a little cheaper, I got a better deal by calling them and they beat PODS prices! I just have mine stored in my front yard while my house gets rebuilt from a fire.

I used door to door storage to move to oregon. A little cheaper than pods and i liked that their storage containers were about half the size so much easier to fill completely full.

We've never needed to use them, but just a word of caution; if you plan to use one (or more), check with city or county ordinances because some have laws on where you can put them... some only allow back or side yard or driveway to the side of the house. Some will let you plop it down anywhere.

Thanks for all the info.
$2000.00 for 3 weeks porscheGal I don't think so.
I don’t want to store it on my property I want to get as much stuff out of here as possible.
That’s why a shipping container wont work they are about $500.00 if not free around here.
If I had some place to store it after filling it that’s the route I would go.
That’s why I was thinking about a old used box truck like UPS or a bread truck and park it at my moms or? .
Then when I do move I could just drive it home.
My wife likes the Pod idea.

I used PODS when we relocated from Mass. to NC. Because we were moving out of state, we had to use the full size 16' units.

A wonderful help was that we were able to use a moving truck for free through our real estate agency.

For the first phase of moving, we borrowed the truck and filled up a 10'x10' storage unit. Once the house sold, we ordered two PODS. We borrowed the moving truck again to empty the storage unit into the pod and then empty out the rest of the house.

Pros:
PODS was great because they held our stuff in the warehouse until we closed on our new house for no extra charge. The cost was reasonable and much cheaper than hiring movers.

Cons:
We barely had enough room in both PODS for all of our stuff and it was too late to order another one. We ended up leaving some stuff behind. Moving yourself really sucks, but it does pay for itself in the end.

Careful there. A POD (like) container is not all that easy to steal where a Van/Truck is ready to roll. Break the window, start her up, and you're gone. With a container they would have to defeat the lock (probably not hard) but then carry the stuff out in front of your home.

I know several folks that had their fully loaded UHaul truck stolen from the front of their home or at a commercial parking lot (they were getting Subway sandwiches). A quick way to rob a house if you ask me.

You can rent a 40' container for about $110 a month and the drop off/pick up fee is only another couple of hundred bucks.

We rented one when we built this last house to store building supplies in, and it was a life saver...

The downside would be, if somebody wanted to, they could have brought a container moving truck and stolen the entire container in probably 5 minutes...If i had it to do over again, i would have teletrac'd the container. We got lucky and had no thefts, but it was utter stupidity to just lock it and hope for the best.

p.s. The city told me that I wasn't allowed to drop a container in our snooty neighborhood and I told them that I was going to anyway because the police department does such a sh-it ty job of protecting new construction sites and if they gave me any problem about it then I would raise hell with the city council... It was on the property for six months and the city never said another word about it.
