My Brother and I went to one PCA Meeting sporting our GruppeB hats, needless to say but it was our last meeting!

tsiegwart 03-11-2009 01:36 PM

I'm going to my first meeting with Nord Stern (PCA region 10) Thursday night. Not sure what to expect.

sammyg2 03-11-2009 01:59 PM

Based on the post and the items on your hood, they may not be the problem.

Zeke 03-11-2009 02:05 PM

Pelican is organizing a wine tasting tour. Draw your own conclusions.

jwhcars 03-11-2009 03:29 PM

My wife and I wore our black 911SCWDP shirts to the PCA meeting and a the X/cross a couple of times......she is now the VP. What a great bunch of people we have......is there going to be adult beverages at ?

Yeah...I agree, take her in dirty when you go.... only thing that could make it any better is that you wear flip flops & cut offs, wife beater & 80's model shades, put all the goodies in a walmart bag & add about 2 extra quarts of oil to the ol' 911 before you go.... just so you have a 3 mile long smoke screen following you when you arrive.... :D

P.S. Please post pics...

In law school a rite of passage was an unofficial reception hosted by the upperclassmen for 1L's during their first week. We'd have a keg or two and several decent, inexpensive wines. Also was an hordouerve table. Mixed in amongst the appetizing nibblies we would put a bowl of "kibbles and Bits" sauteed in butter with a creole seasoning. Or liver flavored catfood as a pate' with some gourmet crackers on the side. Or a loaded nacho plate type dish where the "chilli" was made with canned dog food. You get the idea.

It was such a hoot to watch the 1L's try to be gracious and poised as they sampled the offerings. Of course, the best part was letting them in on the gag (pun intended) at the end of the evening.

Ahhhhh. Those were the days of wine and roses. And Kibbles and Bits. And Alpo.

futuresoptions 03-11-2009 04:38 PM

LOL! reminds me of the time I put exlax gum in my chicklet pack and let my little nephew steal them like he always stole my change etc... off my dresser.... He was about 12, little did I know that day my sister and bio were taking off on a long road trip with him... they came home a couple days later and were gonna take him to the emergency room... I had to pull the bio aside and let him in on the prank....

Rob Channell 03-11-2009 05:56 PM

Haha. That's funny(The wine, cheese, and crackers....not the exlax. The exlax sounds kinda dangerous, not knowing how much someone might eat.). Personally I would've picked a can of Cheese Wiz over the Velveeta. Maybe it's a bit more redneck which would fit in down here. I guess you could take a box of Q-tips in case someone forgot theirs. All in good fun, of course.

I admire the crowd that can clean their car like there's no tomorrow, but I have neither the time nor inclination. I'll try to keep mine running and make it faster when I can. If I had more time to spend on itI'd spend more time trying to make it go fast.......

Our wine and cheese parties were really engine drop parties, usually early in the morning with donuts and coffee that sometimes went to lunchtime when we then ordered pizzas. Eventually, so many of us had done it so many times, that we were good and fast enough to knock out major jobs on our own without making an event out of it. Really kind of killed the clique too. For several years there was a party like this almost every Saturday or at least a tech inspection at a local Porsche shop. It all seems so 2003 now that we've all done it so many times.

I miss that, it was a lot of fun.

The region I belong to transformed itself a couple of years ago - from mostly wine and cheese events to monthly autocross events at a huge venue (the runways at a former Marine Corps Air Station). The events are by far the most heavily attended of all activities and always sell out (over 100 cars each time). Everyone has a great time and you'll find all kinds of Porsches there - from 914's and 924's to brand new GT3 RS's and GT2's. Many of the cars are trailered in due to the fact that they are PCA and /or POC club racers. We have a fun group now.

And to think, I was going to dump my membership a couple of years ago. I'm glad I didn't.

941MXVET 03-11-2009 06:44 PM

We've only been involved for a couple months, but from what we've seen, there seams to be quite a mix of personalities. Some may belong to the 'wine & cheese' club, but most are drivers. AX, track, rally, you name it, they may have raced it. I guess you'll find what you're looking for at the PCA, if you're looking for wine & cheese, you'll find a few of them, if you're looking for drivers with race experence you'll find that too.

Scott,
I agree about the OC region. I've been to a few functions (autocross, day away from work at Streets, etc) and have always found the group to be very down to earth and true car people.

BTW, you probably have seen my Pops at a few of the driving events or even on a wine and cheese tour. He drives a nice, low mileage, silver '89 911 Anniversary Edition, but he's not afraid to track it. ;)

Dueller, great thread. SmileWavy

cl8ton 03-11-2009 09:37 PM

Heh...that was great :D
What Dueller, you don't like $20 salads?

CJFusco 03-12-2009 02:33 AM

Oh, and by the way, I LOVE wine... but sometimes, if you're really honest with yourself, you'd just rather have a beer; chances are, if what I'm doing involves a car, I'd usually rather have a beer.

T77911S 03-12-2009 03:39 AM

try the cheese in a can, that might do it

reminds me of a trip to rodeo.
my daughter likes to compete in horse jumping. so we took a nice ride in the 911 to her friends farm where they were putting on a small rodeo, mostly barrel racing.
her instructor was there with some of the other girls. i said to her, seems to be more friendly here, she said yea, its usually not quite so snobby.
even though we pulled up in the 911 and didnt have a single western belt buckle between us, we got a lot more hey how are you than all the jumping shows we have been to.

Eric 951 03-12-2009 04:58 AM

That's nothing, just try showing up in a BAW.

My one local PCA experience featured the membership chair loudly boasting about how he almost forgot to remove his ROLEX before changing his oil. "Can you believe it, I almost forgot to take off my ROLEX before changing the oil. I mean, can you imagine changing oil in a ROLEX? I mean, I might have gotten oil on my ROLEX." Yep, that was enough for me.

Yeah, he should have had his Timex on. Takes a lickin" and keeps on tickin'.

charleskieffner 03-12-2009 10:10 AM

ya know as a member of the az region pca club, we have an eclectic mix of people fer sure. but the one thing we have in common is the cars. and my local pca does it all. from the wine and cheese deals to the track. i have met some really cool people and really dont have one thing negative to say about anybody or anythang.

our concours due to the climate is beyond belief here in phx and tucson. some of the cars are "to die fer". and both clubs here in az work together on major events. have met some cool people at north snobbsdale porsche that are now my friends and alot of other hidden benefits. i have done concours with my car as well as the track here and at speedfest in fontuckey, kalif. and have had a "break the fun barrier" time at all of the events.

hell theres so many "events" whatever they may be,track/DE/drives/dinners/meetings i cant keep up with all of them.

but the real reason i enjoy it, is because it gives you an excuse to get off yer fat ass and go drive the damn car instead of it sitting in the garage all the time!

plus the value added bonus of these events...........................

you get to meet people that KNOW WHERE THE HELL THE ENGINE IS!

berettafan 03-12-2009 10:14 AM

lord man surely you can step it up a notch on the sugar water. Next time you're at the local booze joint pick up a bottle of something red from Argentina, Chile or Spain. Don't pay more than $11. Look for words like 'Malbec' or 'Rioja'.

Then go home and grill a steak (microwave dinner people will call you a grill snob for this), pour a big glass and enjoy.

Have a bottle of 'Tilia' Malbec that was $8.99. Will be opening it later this evening and just maybe i'll stop at the grocery store for a steak so i can dine with you in spirit.

i promise Dueller you'll find out that wine deserves your selectiveness just as much as steak, sports cars and anything else you have a passion for.

Rikao4 03-12-2009 10:18 AM

take one of your daughters ( I realize you may have to pay her)..
pass her of as your 'babe'

Why bother to join a group of snobbish, racist, little mind people?

Many reasons why my signature contain "No Longer a PCA Member".

LOL...point well taken, Beretta. Confession time for me.

Yup, those items were in my pantry/fridge. As far as velveeta, an absolute must for the occasional greenbeen casserole, mac & cheese, quick rotel tomato dip, chicken spaghetti and many other fine southern, comfort foods. The Ritz? Can't beat 'em with a little cream cheese and homemade pepper jelly with a scotch on the rocks if dinner is gonna be a little late. And if you look in my fridge you'll likely find about 8-10 other cheeses from around the world.

While I've heard there are some "boxed" wines that are pretty tasty for even sophisticated palates, I abhor blush wines no matter how packaged or what the price. That box is in the garage fridge for when the twins, with their immature palates, want to have a glass of wine with dinner. We've tried to acclimate them to more more sophisticated wines but they prefer the sweet kool-aid taste for now. My wife is an experienced sommelier having run another restaurant for 8 years with a cellar that will rival any in a metropolitan area. Alas, she leans towards the whites whereas, I am a die hard red wine fan. But then that can be a good thing. We currently have a modest cellar with perhaps 200 bottles of wines we each enjoy...most, if not all, are bargains we have found on sales bins, closeouts, case specials, etc. A lot of off beat Californias, South American and Australian/NZ varieties. Most under $20/bottle. Heck...now that I think about it, most under $9 a bottle.

We are not wine snobs...we drink what we like and could care less what others think about our selections. We're glad to share our "finds" with others, but have no need to prove our sophistication.

This thread was started solely to entertain. But since it has generated some serious responses and subtle jibes, let me state my real position. I can't stand pretentiousness. Whether its someone trying to impress me with their knowlege of wine or of the nuances of cam timing or the double apex in turn 7. Share with me. Teach me something I didn't know. Make me think. But don't make me a bit player in your passion play of egotism.

And that's all I'm gonna say about that.;)

berettafan 03-12-2009 11:47 AM

Ah fantastic!!!

Tell your wife i LOVE me some NZ Sauv. Blanc!!! Cheap and very very tasty. Some have been waaaaay too heavy on the grapefruit for me but others, like Matua, have been perfect (to my taste anyways!).

Good stuff man and i agree with you completely on the pretentiousness. It has no place anywhere.

I love this line. Beautiful man, just beautiful.

p911dad 03-12-2009 02:43 PM

That IS a great line. As I sip my Chilean $8 bottle of nameless white.. with my NY Cheddar(Cuba) and Wheat Thins.. my hoi polli membership has never been questioned. (I know, I should have a bottle of Walter Taylor Bully Hill opened).

That's funny! Dueller could take both of 'em, and REALLY give 'em something to talk about at future meetings :). He could introduce himself as "Jim Dandy" and tell them he was from Arkansas...

9dreizig 03-12-2009 04:48 PM

Hey Dueller, you gonna wear one of those white suits you southern Lawyers wear all the time ?? That'll impress em too:D

KFC911 03-12-2009 04:53 PM

It would fit right in with the "Jim Dandy" intro ...y'all do remember BOA don't ya :)?
