I finally made the long (two hour) drive to the gravel pit last Sunday, with the express purpose of unlimbering the new 39A. I've shot it extensively at my local range (ten minute drive) on paper, and have been quite pleased with it, so I was eager to start workin' the lever a bit more enthusiastically.
Empty shotgun shells are pretty much toast at 30-50 yards. I managed to keep them hopping, working the lever while they were in flight from the previous shot, getting right back on them before they stopped moving. That's what lever guns are all about... I also brought along the old 10-22 carbine. It's dead stock, as issued, no mods whatsoever except for a new set of XS Sight Systems "ghost ring" peep sights. I'm really starting to like those sights, with sets on my Marlin 1894 and '95 as well. I just wish my 39A would accept a set. It looks like I'll be picking up the old style, side mounted peep for the 39A. The receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope mount, but only uses one screw at the rear of the receiver (it takes a one piece base - two screws in front, one in back). The lack of a second screw hole on top, at the rear, precludes mounting a peep on top. So, the Williams/Lyman/Redfield sidemount will have to do. Of course, the way it shoots with the issue open sights, my shooting partner was wondering why I think I need a peep on it. Commonality is the only issue. If it is going to be my "practice gun" for the big boomers, it would be nice if the sights were the same. I've reached the point where I just can't shoot my heavy .45-70 loads enough to get meaningful practice with them. A 420 grain bullet (RCBS mold # .45-400GC, cast from wheelweights) at 1,900 fps just plain hurts from such a light gun, with such a narrow buttstock. My Ruger # 1 in .458 Winchester Magnum, with 500 grain Hornadys at 2,200 fps has far less felt recoil than that damn '95. Hence the little .22 practice gun. So, gun show on Sunday, looking for peep sights... |
