cheap road bike to buy?

ok, another bicycle thread...

I have an old road bike (sport touring) that I paid $500 bucks for (it was a year old model - 10 years ago). It is a Japanese steel frame bike and I recently put some nice high quality Mavic wheels on it. The brand is Univega, but as some of you know, they [often] did not make the frames themselves.

[1] Should I buy a "new" bike?

- assume same purposes as current road bike

If so, then [2] what should I get?

Is there something wrong with the Univega that would make you want to replace it? How about converting it to a fixie or single speed? I'd look at craigslist rather than buy new since you know what fits you.

I'm not a 1-speed kinda guy...

nothing wrong with it -- I have worn away some gears over the last decade, that's all.

I just saw the other thread... and it's spring time... etc.

I don't have one yet. I was thinking of converting an old hybrid to a SS but there's lots of hills here and I might blow out my 45 y/o knees.

There was an ~10yo Carbon Trek on a CL near me with Ultegra parts for 550.

I'm stalking the CL's looking for a hardtail Bianchi frame to throw the crap off my Spec Rockhopper on and any old Italian Road frame to go fixey on and I've seen some insane deals, just all to small for me.......

$500 for a carbon framset is a good deal, complete bike? Outstanding deal. I think you'll be looking for a while.
