Reminds me of Mark Donohue's death. Head injuries are not something to trifle with

I read the family had gathered to say their goodbyes. They took her off life support this afternoon.

That is a tragedy. And what a freak accident apparently. She just tipped over.

Beginners ski slope.

Bet everyone involved is glad she decided to learn to ski in her mid 40s.

Shame. RIP.

Snip,

You must not be one of those sensitive skier types.

RIP as well.

I used to get everyone's attention in refresher classes (airline refresher) by reminding them of the design limits of the human body. Unassisted design limits. (Running speed, 10 foot drop).

Then reconsider some of the normal 'assisted' design speeds and altitudes we operate at.

My skiing skills are amateurish at best. I learned when i was 16 or so. I've skied probably 20 times in my life. I can't imagine trying to learn in my mid 40s, due to the next day soreness factor alone.

To have everything and lose it in the pursuit of some frivolous new hobby seems like a pretty sick joke by the guy upstairs.

RIP,Sad story especially for the kids,
I was there 2 weeks ago and went down that run,It is easy but you are coming down a mountain so there are still some tricky parts to it although I don't know which part of the run she fell on.The other thing is Monday was about 45 degrees and it happened at 3:00 so with no fresh snow it would have been very icy especially because of March break and the crowds that go with that.
sure shows the importance of a helmet.I find most snowboarders wear one but very few skiers do for some reason

I don't think it is crazy, if you want to do it, I say do for it!!! I have a friend in his 80s, has cancer, is in pain, yet he was skiing in Vermont the last few weeks. I would rather wear out than rust out, and at the rate I'm going, I'll succeed

Here (BC) I'm guessing 80% of the people (skiers and boarders) are wearing helmets. It really makes a lot of sense since they are warm and comfortable and you want to have something on your head anyway.
This must have been a very strange accident. Just a knock to the head that caused a cerebral hemorrhage of some kind.

This is a real bummer.

33 years on skis, but I don't wear a helmet - even after the 20' fall that tore my shoulder up and knocked me out. If I die on skis, I'll have died happy. I've even told my parents this. Heck, I don't wear pads/helmet rollerblading and the one crash where I hit my head, the helmet wouldn't have helped anyway. OK, I'm being stubborn...

Every sport has its risks, even Yoga...

EDIT: Interesting article on head injuries and how little a hit, can cause death.

Lots of people take up skiing in their 40's and 50's. My mom and dad began mid 50's and had 20 good years on the slopes. Nothing wrong with that.

An Aunt of mine noticed how much fun us kids were having on skis, and took her first lesson at age 54. Ended up taking several trips to the Alps when the slopes around Reno/Tahoe weren't enough for her.

She just passed away last year at 80. She lived a very full life.
