Fedex: Our first loss of life
It appears that two of my work colleagues have lost their lives.
I've flown for Fedex for two years, and this place amazes me with how much attention to detail there actually is. Previously, I flew for Kalitta Air and Southern Air, and in both places the airplane arrived at its' destination ONLY because the Captain made sure that it did. That means that the support from the FO and the SO and the company didn't exist. At Fedex? We have TOTAL support. I don't know what happened in China, but tonight two of my colleagues are DEAD. I have been scouring our pilot websites for hours trying to find the names, but I don't have them yet. Anyway, Rest In Peace, the Fedex crew. Sorry- N! |
Sorry, Normy. That's rough. Keep us posted.

Sounds like wind may have played a role. Terrible to hear. Here's what I dug up:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/03/22/japan.planecrash/index.html - - - - - updated 1 minute ago Deadly plane crash at Tokyo airport (CNN) -- The pilot and co-pilot aboard a FedEx cargo plane were killed when the plane burst into flames Monday while landing at Tokyo's Narita airport in Japan, airport and hospital officials said. Both crew members were American men, an official at Narita Red Cross Hospital told CNN. Video from the landing showed the plane bouncing at least twice on the runway and veering left as it turned on its side before bursting into flames. The fire destroyed the aircraft, which was identified by FedEx as a McDonnell Douglas MD-11. Strong winds may have played a role in the crash, said Masaru Fujisaki, an airport official. FedEx Express Flight 80 took off from Guangzhou, China, and crashed at Narita about 6 a.m. Monday (5 p.m. Sunday ET), said FedEx spokesman Matt Ceniceros. According to observations at the airport, wind gusts were reported to be between 30 to 50 mph around the time if the crash. Japan's Kyodo news agency reported that Narita firefighters had worked through the flaming wreckage to try to rescue two people believed to be the crew. The news agency said the cargo plane was landing on Runway A, the longer of the two runways at Narita, a major international airport. |
The video is horrific

Tragic. I just watched the video in the other thread. Looked like he bounced twice on the nose gear before going over left.
|
RIP to the fallen.
|
"National broadcaster NHK identified them as 54-year-old pilot Kevin Kylemosley and his 49-year-old copilot, Anthony Stephen-Pino."
RIP |
May they Rest in Peace, God's Blessings and Comfort to their families and loved ones.

:( Terrible news. It seems like a lot of planes have been going down lately.
|
Condolences to the families of the lost. Prayers and comfort for the friends.
|
Someone told me the MD-11 had unpredictable sink rates near touchdown. Is this true?
|
Wow- that is awful.
|
Very sad :(
I wonder though, how many traffic fatalities has FedEx had? |
Condolences to their families and your Fedex family

I posted this in the other thread, too.
Look at the first of the three video segments here... after main gear contacts the runway, the front gear slams down hard, then the whole plane bounces violently off the runway before coming back down nose first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3rkrrrF6Ls&feature=related |
You have my sympathies...
