Body Armor and Weapon
I am taking a new sales position with a company that provides services related to foreclosed properties. Without getting in to detail on the job... there is a very good chance that I will have to be on site in very improverished areas. For example, in our training this past week, we went in to a heroin den on the side of Chicago, as well as a few other properties in slightly better areas.
Several of the workers told us that they have run in to potentially dangerous situations on the properties, with some of the vagrants, druggies and bad people who are on site. They have, to this point been able to talk their way out of the situations, but nevertheless...the threat does exist for a situation. As a result of this, several of us new people were talking about what we may need to protect ourselves in the likely event that we find ourselves in these areas on site. Being from Detroit, Ive had experience in these neighborhoods before, so they dont really scare me..., but not as part of a full time job... Without being too 'overreactive'...I was wondering what peoples thoughts were here, as far as what type of gun would be suitable to get and carry in the vehicle (with permit of course) as well as recommended body armor if I go that route. I will be doing this in So Cal, thx. |
If you want body armor i have an extra Class IIIA (will stop 240gr .44 magnum) vest i will sell you cheap (assuming it's legal to own where you are). It's a safariland and is designed to be worn under your shirt. I'll include a standard white carrier with it too.
I have 2, only need one. There are about a gillion suitable handguns, what you pick depends on what best fits your hand, your budget, and your training. |
thx m21...can you PM me some details on price, how old it is and also how thin it is, whether it would be able to be worn comfortably under a light jacket...thx
|
I've had the vest about 6 years, and i got it used, so it's likely at least 8 years old. I really have no idea what it's worth, i'll have to surf the web to get an idea what a used Class IIIA Safariland goes for. (New they are very expensive). But i don't need it, so whatever i come up with i'll price it on the low side of the scale for you.
It's designed to be worn under clothing, so it's certainly concealable. It just makes you look about 10lbs heavier, or a little more stocky. They're pretty uncomfortable at first, but once you get used to them they're not that bad. If you're just putting it on when you get to the house and taking it off when you leave it shouldn't be any big fuss at all. Wearing them full time in the summer heat blows, but they're actually welcome if you're outside during the winter months. Then it's just another extra layer of clothing. Class IIIA is the good stuff though- short of the hard ceramic armor it's the best stuff around. The carrier also has slots for CLASS IV ceramic trauma plates front and rear. Those will stop .30-06 armor piercing rounds supposedly. I have an extra set of ceramic plates too, but i'm keeping those. :D |
You might be able to get CCW considering the job circumstances. Worth a shot at least.
|
Hmm, Chicago (bang-bang), i didn't know a CCW was even possible there. Doesn't the city have a total handgun ban or something crazy like that?
Ask Legion about this- he has a lot of knowledge on the subject of Chicago (bang-bang) and guns. |

Find another job. Good luck getting a CCW here.

"For example, in our training this past week, we went in to a heroin den on the side of Chicago, as well as a few other properties in slightly better areas." ...and missed the last bit about So Cal. Sorry. Is it legal to carry an unloaded firearm locked in the glove box or in a locked briefcase there in So Cal? That's legal in many states. |

Not in Chicago for certain. In SoCal you won't get one if you live in Los Angeles County. Not a chance. If you're a federal judge, you MIGHT get one. Maybe. Other than that, no chance. |

You can read all about the transport laws on the CA DOJ website. |
Evidently OC is a little more lenient. I'm going to get a Utah one just for the heck of it. Might come in handy some time...never know.
|
OC is more lenient, as is Riverside County (I checked when I was going to buy our house out there). Reciprocity between counties is another issue entirely and worth another 20 pages of discussion at least.
As a general rule, don't get caught carrying in L.A. county. Period. Ever. It will be a nightmare for you. Unless of course you're a criminal or an illegal. Then you can naturally do whatever you want. |

thanks for the input.. as for "get another job"...in this economy it is easier said than done... even with a stellar resume, prospects are very very limited right now, and IMO that is not changing any time soon. Im not desperate for work, but this is a solid opportunity financially and other wise and like everyone, I do need to work...the only drawback that I will be on site fairly often...though I will deal more in commercial propertys than REO.
Anyway, thanks for the input.. M21 Ill be in touch on that vest. |
