Hoot! He's on the billiards posting boards...some wags calling out that he made a cue ball foul!
Wish I had the kid's obviously good eyesight! Tho it looks like he needs to work on stance & stroke a bit. Oh well, he has time...;) Cindy & I did some recreational ball banging today...the big happening was welcoming Sgt. Don Malarkey of Easy Company back home. His first time out since undergoing quadruple bypass surgery on Jan 30th...as he mentioned in his book, it's Thursday, and he wanted to be around the snooker table at the Cue Ball. I asked if he remembered an old Lumbermill when he was in Zel Am Zee back in the day. He told me easy company was the first in Zel am Zee, but he didn't recall a lumber mill turned car company. He did add that only members of the Nazi party in good standing were allowed to live there, so the G.I.'s weren't very friendly with the locals...and that "we wrecked some German cars"...;) |
You guys are all jealous!
I had to read up on Sgt. Don Malarkey. He went through a lot. I have a neighbor that was in the U.S. 8th Air Force, 306th Bomb Group, 423rd Bomb Squadron - "THE REICH WRECKERS". He volunteers his retirement years at the local hospital (non military). He has had a number of valve jobs as well. These guys are amazing. |
Dave...you're right about that one...Those guys in B-17 had it rough! My Uncle Gordon, now longer with us, was a B-17 Captain. Malarkey told me of Bastogne, freezing his ass off, supplies & ammo short, looking up and seeing "thousands" of B-17's fly overhead...he and his friends cheering them on.
For a great read: Easy Company Soldier, by Sgt. Don Malarkey with Bob Welch. A quote from the book...talking about the battle of the Bulge: "A tank battalion from Patton's 3rd army had penetrated the German lines and rolled into town. The circle was broken. We could get supplies in and wounded out. But later, we heard that the 3rd had rescued us. That cockeyed idea is phonier than a three-dollar bill. Easy Company didn't need rescuing." Generally recognized as the Best pool player in the USA right now is Shane Van Boening of South Dakota. Give this kid another 20 years, and Shane could be in trouble... (keeping on topic...sorta.) |

That kid is cool!
Malarkey? I'd just like to shake his hand, I wouldn't even know what to say to him except maybe "Thank you". What a guy and what a group. |
