The boy wants to be a firefighter.

My 21yo son Jonathan finally decides he wants to follow in my shoes and become a firefighter. So we are on a long road, he is taking the right steps and I'm very proud of him. It is a great job and I love going to work every day. He spent the day with me and went on some runs to get a feel for what is in store for him, i wish i had some pull in the process but I don't.
Pic of him in my gear, so he knows what it all feels like.

Good for him! Nothing better/prouder than following Dad's footsteps into a rewarding career. Most 21 y/o's are still sitting on mommy/daddy's couch playing video games with no clue as to their future.

Best of luck to your boy.

I'd say that's about as good as done!
Enjoy the journey, proud papa.

Hey, you guys are the real Emergency 51!!!!

What a cool show from the 70's.

Does your tone sound like it did in the show?

Seriously, good luck to your son. It's a job I know I couldn't perform. You must be very proud of him. Good job on raising him.

Thanks for your service.

IMO there is no more noble career on earth than being a fireman.

It's troubling how many end up with drinking problems though, even if it's completely understandable.

What a cool thing.

I do well and truly admire the skill and fortitude it takes to be a firefighter. You guys have my utmost respect...I have done a lot of interesting things in my life but I know I couldn't do what you guys and gals do.

The first time through the Navy school for shipboard fire and damage control was illuminating: I have always been able to remain fairly calm and deliberate in tense situations, but the first time through the fire course every part of my intellect and soul wanted to run...I wasn't thinking at all, I was in survival mode.

It never really got any better. I stayed put and did my part, but I was never, ever at ease, never in control.

A tip of the hat to you and your son. What you folks do is amazing to me

as a Paramedic , the only downside I saw..
was in order for me to have a good (exciting) day...
someone had to have a bad one...
blood and gut's all day..no problem....
except the little ones...those will break you fast..
oh..and don't come near me with a needle..I faint.

Great job for him. I hope he can put up with the boredom for 20 short years. Then if he can, he can retire on one hell of a great pension. What a gig, if he can get it.

Agreed! I can handle the most gory things there are. But, when a kid gets hurt, that does me in. To me that's the worst aspect of the fire service. Dealing with child fatalities or serious injuries. Been doing it 18 yrs, still don't get any easier.

GL, hope your son gets in soon. I'm sure he will love it. As you know, there is no stronger camaraderie.

Cool. We have a fireman do our annual first aid training at work. Always some wild stories.

Just make sure if he drives the trucks, he doesn't pull a stunt like two HFD drivers did yesterday and wreck two under a year old trucks into each other at an intersection. 12 people sent to the hospital including a cyclist in critical condition
