but who cares about them
should a higher MPG car be allowed a higher X-way speed
example
a 10 mpg car gets to go 50 mph
a 15 mpg car gets to go 55 mph
a 20 mpg car gets to go 60 mph
a 25 mpg car gets to go 65 mph
a 30 mpg car gets to go 70 mph
a 35 mpg car gets to go 75 mph
a 40 mpg car gets to go 80 mph
a 45 mpg car gets to go 85 mph
a 50 mpg car gets to go 90 mph
over 55mpg no limit

tags are classed by mpg rate so cops know at a look

I see a few flaws. First, the higher the mpg potential of a car, the less likely they are going to be worthy of those increasing speeds. A Chevy Aveo can get 40mpg but it is scary as hell above 80. An M3 only gets 25mpg but feels rock solid at 100.

Also, that 50mpg car will not be getting 50mpg at 90mph, unless that is part of the requirement.

How about graduated licensing. Two classes of license: the current basic license that gives you access to 50% of the right lanes on the highway and then a much more exclusive, rigorous license that has higher fees and much stricter regulations that allows for much higher speeds in the left lanes of the highway.

Cars traveling different speeds on the same stretch of road is very dangerous. It's called "variance". From a safety standpoint, you're better off having everyone doing the same speed.

IIRC, years ago Louisiana entertained the idea of selling a "permit" to allow people to exceed the speed limit. That way they could make up the difference in the funding they would lose from the federal govt from having a certain percentage of people speeding. The whole thing collapsed due to the "variance" thing...

This a good point that I forgot to mention. Speed doesn't kill. Delta speed kills.

I have believed for some time that we should implement a program similar to Japan's Kei Cars.

what exactly would this solve?

more sales of ultra high mpg cars
and more high mpg cars inc diesels
less sales of low mpg cars
maybe less use of the older ones too
less imported oil = less money to the arabs


we do currently do have high speed differences on x-ways
some do 55 mph some due 90 mph no matter the limit
current law allows 40mph minimum speeds on most x-ways

yes they would need to limit lane use for slower traffic

That limits the speed of a 911SC to 60 mph (~20mpg) and a 3.2L carrera to 65 mph (~25mpg). Not a good idea ;).
